POETRY A LA CARTE RADIO SHOW
on WMUA-Amherst 91.1 FM
Mondays at 5:30pm (summer schedule)
WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule. Streamed live at http://www.wmua.org/.
The program, hosted by Daisy Mathias, includes reading aloud from past and contemporary poets, and occasionally features live interview and poetry-reading with a local poet.

Poets (and 'prosets') are invited to participate in:
"Valley Poets and Writers on Growing Older:
the Joys and Challenges of Aging"

Monday, June 24, Whately Cong. Church, 7-9pm
and
Monday, July 29, same location/time.
Two years ago, a similar event drew 35 people to hear six valley poets, all between the ages of 61 and 83

Please send copies of one or two samples of your poems or prose on this theme.  Each will read for 8 minutes, followed by up to 3 minutes of audience response.  Each event this summer will include six authors reading their work.
Admission is free; donations will be requested to cover the rental cost of the hall, plus the cost of photocopying the poems or prose shared by each writer (with their permission).  This allows audience members to read along if they wish, and take the poetry/prose home to enjoy again and share with others.

There will also be a photocopied booklet, to offer participants and attenders (and others who hear about the event but can't attend), which will include poetry and prose pieces on this theme by any writer in the valley, not just those who participate at the event.  In order to cover the cost involved, each author whose work is included will be asked to contribute $5-$10.
I'd also like this booklet to include poetry and prose by other poets, both past and contemporary, well-known or not.  So please send any such poetry or prose (not more than a page long) that inspires or touches you deeply about living life to the fullest, aging gracefully, and facing/befriending death.

John Berkowitz, Northampton, age 66, author of self-published first book of poetry last year called "Saving--and Savoring--the World".   413-325-4533   johnpberk@gmail.com

**WordXWord Festival 2013**
7 Days of Poetry & Spoken Word, August 11 - 17

May 16, 2013, Pittsfield, MA - The 5th annual WordXWord Festival will present an unprecedented array of poetry, spoken word, storytelling, workshops and word-related activities August 11 - 17, 2013 at locations throughout the Upstreet Cultural District of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Poets In Residence
The festival will be anchored by the week long residency of four dynamic, nationally acclaimed poet/spoken word artists: Jon Sands, Robbie Q Telfer, Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz and Omar Holman. Sands and Telfer will share hosting/emceeing duties for the week-long festival, while Aptowicz and Holman will serve as resident personalities, popping up and chiming in throughout the week’s events. In addition, all four will present their own work as part of the Feature Night and Finale programs.

Words and More Words
The festival schedule includes poetry performances and readings by both local and national artists; the finale of the WordXWord Story Slam series; the popular WXW Poetry Slam; an iPhone Poetry festival-within-a-festival; the Amazing Poetry Race, pitting teams of two against each other as they unravel clues to move from location to location and face a variety of challenges involving words, mental and physical challenges; Feature Night, a gathering spotlighting some of the most significant poets and spoken word artists on the national scene including the four poets-in-residence; the Encyclopedia Show, a variety extravaganza in which artists and experts from multiple disciplines use their talents to present a verbal and musical encyclopedia entry, with the mission to “chafe against logic and proof and find meaning in obfuscation”; and the Grand Finale destined to top last year’s Poetry Olympics in spectacle.

Words Everywhere
As is the WXW tradition, events will take place in a range of non-traditional venues including the Berkshire Museum, a barber shop, street corners, art galleries and storefronts. In addition to the performance events the festival will present several writing and performing workshops led by the visiting artists.

More information is available at wXw365.org.

WordXWord is a 501(c)3 non-profit, whose work is made possible with the support of companies and individuals who understand the value of creating interest and excitement for literacy and the creative use of language as well as the experience of community that results from bringing poets, spoken word artists and audiences together.

Greylock Federal Credit Union is the lead sponsor for WordXWord Festival 2013.
