The Western Mass Training Consortium (The Consortium)
invites you to attend the opening of its 5th Annual Art show, Flux, on
Sunday, June 3, from 1 pm - 4 pm
at Apollo Grill in the Eastworks
building at 116 Pleasant Street
in Easthampton.
The event will feature visual artists from the region
who have received 2007 Career Initiatives grants from The Consortium.
Flux is defined as: a continuous moving on or passing by
(as in a stream); a substance used to promote fusion; the rate of transfer of
fluid, particles, or energy across a given surface; a continued flow.
Artists Larry Ditman, Virginia Harlow, Molly Rupp and the show's
curator, Janice Sorensen provide not only a range of styles but a
fluidity within each piece and a movement within each artist's body of
work that speaks to the show's title. Performances at the June 3rd
opening for Flux will feature recordingartist Robin Lane, music by
A Woman's Voice and poetry by Chaya Grossberg who will also be
hosting an open mic. The event will be catered by Apollo Grill.
The Western Massachusetts Training Consortium is co-sponsoring the art
show through its Career Initiatives program. The Consortium creates
conditions that enhance the lives and make possible the dreams of people
living with disabilities and/or the impact of abuse in communities
throughout Western Massachusetts.

Submission Guidelines
Submission limits
Poems, lyrics: Three to five poems or lyrics with music notation (approx 50 lines/spaces max),
and/or Fiction: 2-3 short (250-500 words double-spaced) fictions, and/or
Non-fiction: 2-3 concise (500-1000 words double-spaced) non-fictions. and/or
Art/photos: line art, block prints preferably black/white suitable for 5x7 or less sizing.
NEW: Reviews of journals, books, film: incisive but fair, 250-300 words.

Starting in 2007 the journal will be published annually, in the Fall of the year. There is no guarantee that publication will be timely since natural and man-made disasters, illness, or the occasional disorganized spell may intervene.

Submission deadline: June 1st
NOTE: Electronic submissions preferred, as it saves me time. Either paste into e-mail or attach a .doc file; please, NO zip or mime files Be sure to check grammar, punctuation, line breaks, paragraphing, apt use of transitions, effective word choice etc etc. Include your full name on every page of hardcopy submissions, in case materials flutter wildly around the room, the way parakeets do, and must be recaptured and restored to their original order and completeness. Always keep a copy for your records in case they are lost in transmission and because your submitted copy will not be returned. Most, but not all edits, will be subject to author’s approval.
THEMES/GENRES: The Equinox is eclectic thematically. Its goal is to offer a forum for the many voices of our region, even at the risk of “cacophony.” Political commentary, controversial topics handled with care, history, humor, etc are all welcomed as is art work, music notations and lyrics and more. Acceptance depends totally on the subjective, arbitrary decision of the editor, who is a sucker for a thoughtful message crafted into life with well-chosen words and imagry. Simple charm or complex angst — & all points between — equally considered.
Short stories and non-fiction are especially encouraged to maintain a prosaic balance to the poetics; else wise, the excess of paddling poets will have our literary vessel turning in circles. And the wordsmiths would benefit from the tuneful and artful contributions of those who craft meaning from sounds and sights.
Previously published work OK; author responsible for obtaining written permissions. Never before published writers are welcome. Contributors’ rewards are fame and one free copy; additional copies at cost or by donation. This represents a change in policy: contributors were awarded two free copies of the biannual issue to which they contributed. The costs of publication, whether biannual or annual, are such that I must be more frugal i.e., less generous; however, in the interests of distribution, I will accept payment on a sliding scale for all copies in excess of the contributor copy -- no reader will be denied!

Susan B. Anthony Somers-Willett and Genevieve VanCleve.

Susan B.A. Somers-Willett is the author of a book of poetry, Roam,
published as part of the Crab Orchard Award Series Open Competition
in 2006. In addition to her work being featured in several nationally-circulated
poetry journals and anthologies, Susan has enjoyed success as a poet on the
page and the stage. She has featured nationally as a performance poet,
has competed at three National Poetry Slams, and her work was a
quarter-finalist for Philophonema's Lyric Recovery Festival at Carnegie Hall.

Genevieve Van Cleve lives and works in Austin, Texas.
She is a professional writer and performer with years of poverty,
joy, and "experience" to prove it. Her work concentrates on the
finer things, social justice, relationships, feminism, politics, and mendacity.
Her future plans include more of the same performing, writing, c
reating, working, and living.

THING.IMAGE.IDEA.LINE: Two Poetry Workshops with Brad Davis

Thursdays, May 17 & 24, 2007 6:30-8:00 pm This workshop series is for anyone who wants to think about and make poems.
Over two sessions each participant will move from (a) the thrilling awkwardness of being here to (b) the satisfaction of having made something that testifies to his or her voice and vision. Please bring with you to the first workshop something of personal value that is inanimate and can be held in one hand, like an infant's cap. Perhaps a cereal bowl or sea shell or that baseball from the night game at Fenway? (Suffice it to say,no pets, no photographs, no favorite poems.)
The object(s) you bring in will serve as a stimulus for writing excercises.
Poet and teacher, Brad Davis directs the Writers Studio and edits the Broken Bridge Review at Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT. Winner of an AWP Journal Award and the 2005 Sunken Garden Poetry Competition, his work has appeared in such journals as Poetry, The Paris Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, DoubleTake, Puerto del Sol, Ascent, and Image. He has three books of poems: Short List of Wonders (Hill-Stead Museum); and Through War Break Out and Song of the Drunkards (Antrim House).

Ibbetson Press Journal Release
On June 10, 2007 at 5PM at McIntyre and Moore Books in Davis Square ( 255 Elm St.), Somerville, the Ibbetson Street Press will celebrate the release of its literary journal "Ibbetson Street 21" The press was founded in 1998, by Doug Holder, Timothy, Richard Wilhelm and Dianne Robitaille, and started publishing from its home on (33) Ibbetson Street in Somerville, Mass, later moving several streets down to 25 School Street in the same city. Since its inception the press has released over 30 books of poetry from local and national authors, and 21 issues of the journal "Ibbetson Street." Ibbetson Street is listed in the "Index of American Periodical Verse," and won several pics of the month from the "Small Press Review." Many of the journals and books published over the years are archived at Harvard, Brown, Buffalo, Yale, university libraries, as well as "Poet's House" in New York City.The reading will cellebrate the release of "Ibbetson 21" The new issue has poetry from such local stars as : Timothy Gager, Bert Stern, Deborah Priestly, Lo Galluccio, Dorian Brooks, Robert K. Ryk McIntyre is a is a three-time National Poetry Slam Team member, as well as Co-host at The Cantab Poetry Reading. He has toured nationally and in Canada, opening for acts as varied as Leon Redbone and Jim Carroll, as well as appearing as part of Lollapalooza 1994. He is a member of Doc Brown's Traveling Poetry Show and performed at NPS2006 at "The Legends Of Slam" showcase. He has been published in Short-Fuse- An Anthology Of New Fusion Poets, 100 Poets Against The New World order Nth Magazine and The Worcester Review."

Lolita Paiewonsky writes librettos, drama, fiction and, especially, Poetry (since the second grade!). Her obsession (of the past year and a half) is Historical Fiction and Aleksandr Pushkin, the grandfather of Russian Literature who is Afro-Russian. steadfast believer in artistic and inter-disciplinary collaborations, besides reading/‘performing’ her work, Lolita has presented her poetry with classical and jazz music, original choreography, and exhibited as “poet?ge” - Visual Poetry. She has been featured poet and on the program at many poetry venues, including Borders/Boston by Tapestry of Voices, Soaring Places Videos, and upcoming at the Fireside/Co-Housing Series. Her poetry has appeared in a number of journals, including The Harvard Dudley Review, The Sydney-Hampden Poetry Review, Collage-Collector’s Edition Anthology of St. Croix Poets, Bradley University Journal, and other publications and local newspapers. The writer has published three limited edition chapbooks - Who hears the gull’s song?; Fragments and Reflections; and Lights AglowLuces Brillantes; two upper school student/faculty illustrated literary journals at St. Croix (USVI) Country Day School; edited the Harvard Graduate School of Education ALANA Anthology 2006: We are The River, and a forthcoming anthology at First Church in CambridgeAnthology 2006-2007);
