The Noises We Make: A Spoken Word Poetry Event
Saturday December 19, 2009 @ 6:30pm, Dynamite Space: THORNES Basement 150 Main Street, Northampton.
The Best Damn Poetry Show (Northampton's exclusively spoken-word poetry show that offers an Open Mic + Musical Interlude + Feature Poets) invites you to interrupt our regularly-scheduled programming at this ALL OPEN MIC event, where the Featured Poets =YOU.

FIRST TIMERS, OLD-TIMERS, FREE-STYLERS, and SPOKEN WORD ROCK STARS: Come out, come out! We want to here what you've got! Practice your word-craft, get to know other artists, and participate in building the spoken word scene in the valley. This is a friendly environment to try out some new stuff and re-work old tricks. All ages welcome, but know there usually is some "adult content." Even though it's non-competitive, please don't forget to kick ass, blow minds, connect souls, and open hearts with your words and energy, if you think you can.

We're actively seeking local and new talent for the usual "Feature Poets" component of our show. Perhaps a slam is in our 2010 future?
Hosted by Dana Wilde and Tanya Rubins. For more info: 413.584.8328 [email protected]
Space for this event is provided by Thornes Marketplace and storefront ART, the artist residency & exhibition program of Commonwealth Center for Change (C3).

Maria Luisa Arroyo and Friends
Forbes Library, Wed. January 6. 2010

What better way to start the new year than with poetry! Mark your calendars now for a terrific reading by bilingual poet, María Luisa Arroyo. Maria will be inviting friends to read with her.

María's book, Gathering Words: Recogiendo Palabras, was recently reviewed by Cathleen Robinson for El Sol Latino,

"María Luisa Arroyo, a transplanted Puerto Rican who grew up in the North End of Springfield, is an artist blessed with the talent of finding exactly the right words and the right cadence to show what she sees and what she feels. She shares that vision with us in her word pictures and word music. Her readers and her listeners can draw their own conclusions after experiencing the truths her poetic vision imparts."

A Springfield North End native educated at Colby (B.A.), Tufts (M.A.) and Harvard (A.B.D.) in German Language and Literature, María Luisa Arroyo writes and publishes poetry as she raises her son, facilitates writing workshops, teaches adult learners the power of writing and of owning math concepts as a G.E.D. instructor, and supports community ventures such as Teatro V!da, the first Latin@ theater and performing arts in Springfield. A 2004 Massachusetts Cultural Council grant winner in poetry, María Luisa Arroyo is delighted to return to the Forbes Library in order to share poems from her published collection of poetry, Gathering Words: Recogiendo Palabras (The Bilingual Press, Tempe, AZ: June 2008) and from her chapbook, "Touching and Naming the Roots of this Tree" (September 2007).

This reading is part of the Seventh Annual Forbes Poetry Series. The series takes place on the first Wednesday of the month from October to May at the Forbes Library. Readings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the Friends of the Forbes Library.

Upcoming Readings

Always the first Wednesday of the month in the library's elegant Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum. Free and open to all.

SUSAN HOWARD CASE MEMORIAL POETRY CORNER

The Forbes Library in Northampton, MA has created a new collection of the works of local poets named the Susan Howard Case Poetry Corner. This collection has been named in memory of a local poet who contributed to the library's rich poetry community through her volunteer service. The non-circulating collection consists of poetry books and chapbooks by Pioneer Valley poets, and locally published literary journals. "The idea for this collection developed in response to the abundance of many gifted poets in our area," said D.M. Gordon, Forbes Library Writer-in-Residence who created the idea for this new collection.

The collection will be housed in the Arts & Music magazine lounge on the library's second floor. The items in the collection are to be read in the library and comfortable seating is available nearby. The library hopes to grow the collection through donations. Anyone interested in donating to the collection should contact Lisa Downing, Assistant Director, at 413-587-1017 or .

Poets Asylum

Sunday Dec. 13:

This week we're trying something new with the TED conference inspired 8-Minute Speech Slam. This will be a one round slam with a invitational slate of 7 competitors plus one wild card slot for someone present that night who is prepared to take part. Each person will perform the "speech of their life" about some topic they find deeply important, personal or just plain enriching. Performances will be judges by audience members and the winner of the night will head some with some bragging rights (and a prize of some sort if we can figure out something appropriate).

Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words.

Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at 6:00 p.m. No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature.

The Dirty Gerund

Shakti was created with the intention of enhancing women's sense of belonging within the poetry community through the an unmoderated writing circle. For more information please contact Sou MacMillan at
.

THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Poet and journalist Victor D. Infante hosts The Eclectic Word, an Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets, satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd, the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month, as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience.
So give it a listen! It's going to be a blast!

WEDNESDAYS at the CANTAB

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Central Square's world-famous Cantab Lounge presents weekly performances from local and national poets, as well as a chance to present your own work in the open mic or poetry slam. DJ Muse spins before the show and between poets.

Upcoming features include:

• Wednesday, December 16
Def Poet, National Poetry Slam veteran, and Cave Canem fellow Tara Betts brings us work from her debut collection, Arc and Hue. A prolific writer, her work appears in numerous anthologies and journals, including both Spoken Word Revolution anthologies. Second semi-final in the 8x8 series: Sean, Charley, April, and the 12/2 winner.

• Wednesday, December 23
Six trips to the National Poetry Slam with the Denver team, including the 2006 champions and the 2004 runners-up, might make Paulie Lipman Colorado’s original franchise player. This post-punk contemporary nerd sweetheart is swinging through New England on another leg of his seemingly perpetual tour schedule. Season final slam: 12/9 vs. 12/16 winners.

• Wednesday, December 30
Virtually unknown to New England before the 2008 NorthBEAST tournament, Philadelphia slammer Leslie McIntosh wowed the local audience with the craft and subtlety of his slam work. After a year of negotiations, we’ve convinced him to take a break from his own poetry studies to bring something new for us to hear. Last open poetry slam of 2010.
