Joy Harjo to Read at Westfield State
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, Muskogee (Creek) poet and musician Joy Harjo is coming to Westfield State University for an evening performance of music and poetry. Harjo will be performing poems and also songs on the saxophone with her accompanying guitarist beginning at 7pm in Scanlon Banquet Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Irina Mashinski is a bilingual poet and translator. She has authored seven books of poetry in Russian, and her most recent collections are Volk [Wolf] (Moscow: NLO, 2009) and Raznochinets pervyi sneg i drugie stikhotvoreniia [Raznochinets First Snow and Other Poems] (New York: Stosvet Press, 2009). Her work has appeared in a variety of literary journals and anthologies, including Poetry International, Fulcrum, Zeek, The London Magazine, and An Anthology of Contemporary Russian Women Poets (Iowa City: University of Iowa Press, 2005). She is the co-editor (with Robert Chandler) of the forthcoming Anthology of Russian Poetry from Pushkin to Brodsky (Penguin, 2014), as well as co-founder (with Oleg Woolf) and co-editor (with Robert Chandler and Oleg Woolf) of the Cardinal Points literary journal, published in the U.S. in English and Russian. Irina Mashinski is the winner of several literary awards, including the Russian America (2001) and Maximilian Voloshin (2003) Awards. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Serbian.
ALL SMALL CAPS
Monday, September 26th, is our next reading for the All Small Caps series, and the beginning of our sixth season. Please bring your work, work you admire and want to share, or just come listen to the featured readers.
The featured readers:
D M Gordon's poems and stories have been published widely in such journals as The Massachusetts Review, Nimrod, The Northwest Review as well as Poetry Daily. Prizes include The Betsy Colquitt Award from descant, The Editor's Choice Award from the Beacon Street Review, and First Prize for a short story in Glimmer Train. Phi Beta Kappa, Masters in Music from Boston University, she's the recipient of a 2008 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in fiction, having been a finalist in poetry in 2004. She's been an equestrian and chamber musician, and currently works as a free-lance editor in both poetry and prose. She facilitates weekly public discussion of contemporary poetry for Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts, and is the author of Fourth World (Adastra Press, 2010) and Nightly, at the Institute of the Possible (Hedgerow Books, 2011).
The reading will be held, as usual, at the Deja Brew (57 Lockes Village Rd, Wendell). Doors will open at 7 and the open mic portion of the reading will begin at 7:30, followed by a short break, followed by the featured readers. There will be food and drink available. JANE HIRSHFIELD ’s poems, described by the The New York Times as “passionate and radiant,” embrace both human experience and the natural world with empathy and care. Her seventh luminescent collection, Come, Thief, was just released. A long-time Zen practitioner, she has edited and co-translated three poetry anthologies focusing on women’s spirit and is author of Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. Hirshfield’s many honors include fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, and the NEA. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Forbes Library Weekly Poetry Discussion Group
The Poetry Discussion at Forbes Library will resume meeting on Mondays at 7 PM in the Coolidge Room, starting September 26 and running through December 12 for the fall session. Poets to be discussed will include Jane Hirshfield, Diane Gilliam, Ida Stewart, John Ashbery, Patricia Smith and Gerald Stern.

POETRY A LA CARTE RADIO SHOW

WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule.

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic
In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers of all styles and ages.
1st Tuesday of each month at the Deb Koffman Gallery 137 Front Street, Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.” is hosted by John Meeks and there is usually a $7 suggested donation for heat and electricity. There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them. The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

The d'Alzon Arts Series: Poetry Reading
takes place at Assumption College (500 Salisbury Street, Worcester) in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library on the third Friday of each month during the academic year. The format is an open mic for the first half-hour or so, a short break with refreshments and then 2 featured poets.. The reading starts at 7:00 p.m. and typically runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Readings run throughout the school year.
THE POETS ASYLUM
Sunday, September 25:
Join the Poets' Asylum this week for a Back-to-School Slam, a spotlight performance by Tara Harding and a Bake Sale! Members of the 2011 Worcester Youth Slam team will compete against area educators for props and prizes. This event will benefit the Youth Slam to help pay off some of their expenses from their most recent trip to the Brave New Voice event. Plus we are excited to have Seattle poet Tara Harding perform a set for us. She is the author of Bring Down the Chandeliers, published by Write Bloody Press in 2011, and is the current Writer-In-Residence at Richard Hugo House in Seattle. Last but certainly not least we'll be holding a bake sale to showcase the cooking talents of the Asylum.

The Dirty Gerund

Calliope: Poetry Readings at West Falmouth Library

Gail Hanlon is the author of a new chapbook Sift (Finishing Line Press, 2010). Her poems have appeared in Ploughshares, Verse Daily, The Iowa Review, Folio and in Best American Poetry and other anthologies. She also received first prize in the National Writers Union 10th Annual Poetry Contest. Gail lives in Portsmouth, NH.
John Hodgen’s fourth book of poetry Heaven & Earth Holding Company (University of Pittsburgh Press) was released in August 2010. He is the author of Grace, winner of the 2005 AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry, In My Father’s House and Bread Without Sorrow. He has won the Grolier Prize for Poetry, an Arvon Foundation Award and the Chad Walsh Poetry Prize from Beloit Poetry Review. John is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Assumption College, Worcester, MA.
Carole Stasiowski’s poems have been published in Spoon River Poetry Review, Northeast Magazine, Zone 3 and forthcoming in the anthology, Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. She was poetry editor for The Connecticut Writer. A frequent participant at The Frost Place seminar, Carole is a 20+ member of the Wood Thrush Poets and lives in Cotuit.
