Bob Susskind writes intensely in short spurts and does not save his pieces on his computer. He has yet to publish a volume of his short poems but loves to speak them out loud to any captive audience. His transcendent nonautobiography has a way of putting him in his place.
A native of the Missouri Ozark Mountains, Julie Olmsted was an actress and cabaret performer in New York City prior to becoming a minister. This December, she will celebrate twenty years in that calling. Julie is married to the genius musician/composer Jeff Olmsted (a Northampton native) and has two college-age children of whom she is very proud. Prior to moving to Northampton last year, she was a columnist for the Dayton Daily News in the Saturday faith section. Fifty-two of those essays appear in her book, Stepping Onto the Invisible Bridge: Courage for Every Season of Your Faith Journey. She has dabbled in poetry writing and recently pledged herself to the task of 30 Poems for Thirty Days, collecting proceeds to benefit the “Center for New Americans,” an organization that helps refugees and immigrants learn to read and speak English. She will be reading from memoirs based on her experience of life growing up in the Ozarks. It is a work in progress called, “Meet the Family.”
The Gallery of Readers series began in 1990 and takes its name from its first location, in Northampton's Forbes Library art gallery. The readers in the series are participants in Robin Barber and Carol Edelstein's Vernon Street Writing Workshops. This year, Carol and Robin have launched the Gallery of Readers Press, a new nonprofit venture intended to provide workshop participants with an opportunity to publish their work.

Nikky Finney is the author of four collections of poetry: On Wings Made of Gauze; Rice, recipient of a PEN America Open Book Award; The World Is Round, recipient of the 2004 Benjamin Franklin Award for Poetry; and Head Off & Split. She also wrote Heartwood, a collection of short stories for literacy students, and edited The Ringing Ear, an anthology of African American poets writing and reflecting on that historical American geography known as “the South.” A recipient of the Kentucky Foundation for Women Artists Fellowship Award and The Governor’s Award in the Arts, Finney has taught at Smith College and Berea College, and is a former faculty member at Cave Canem, a writing home for African American poets. She is presently professor of creative writing at the University of Kentucky.

Area Youth Speak Out for the Environment
On Friday November 18, 7pm at the Northampton Center for the Arts, a public event
will be held called “It’s Our Future! Youth Speak Out To Save the Environment and
the Earth”. A dance with two local youth bands will follow.
Young people between ages 8 and 25 are invited to use poetry, prose, music, dance,
hip-hop, skits, video, and comedy to express their views and feelings about climate
change and other environmental issues, and share their hope and vision for a more just,
ecologically sustainable, and peaceful world.

Performers must sign up in advance before Nov. 15. Prizes will be awarded to every performer. There will also be open mic time for audience participation.
Emcees for the event will be John Berkowitz, coordinator of Pioneer Valley Climate Action, and Savannah Sullivan, Western Mass. organizer of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.
The dance begins at 9:30pm, featuring two local bands with young musicians. The NCFA is at 17 New South Street, across from the Academy of Music. Donationson a sliding scale from $3 to $15 are requested.

Forbes Library Weekly Poetry Discussion Group
The Poetry Discussion at Forbes Library will resume meeting on Mondays at 7 PM in the Coolidge Room, starting September 26 and running through December 12 for the fall session. Poets to be discussed will include Jane Hirshfield, Diane Gilliam, Ida Stewart, John Ashbery, Patricia Smith and Gerald Stern.

WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule.

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic
In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers of all styles and ages.
1st Tuesday of each month at the Deb Koffman Gallery 137 Front Street, Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.” is hosted by John Meeks and there is usually a $7 suggested donation for heat and electricity. There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them. The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

The d'Alzon Arts Series: Poetry Reading
takes place at Assumption College (500 Salisbury Street, Worcester) in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library on the third Friday of each month during the academic year. The format is an open mic for the first half-hour or so, a short break with refreshments and then 2 featured poets.. The reading starts at 7:00 p.m. and typically runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Readings run throughout the school year.

LISA STARR is a two-time recipient of the Rhode Island fellowship for poetry and was recently named Poet Laureate for the state of Rhode Island, in which capacity she hopes to develop "an outreach program with workshops in every school, library and senior center in the state." Starr has published three full-length collections of poetry: Mad With Yellow (2009), Days of Dogs and Driftwood (1993), and This Place Here (2001). Starr is the founder and director of the Block Island Poetry Project, a nationally acclaimed writing series.

Lori Desrosiers' first full-length collection of poems, The Philosopher’s Daughter is forthcoming from Salmon Poetry in 2012. Her chapbook, Three Vanities was published by Pudding House Press in 2009. Lori’s poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including a prompt in Wingbeats, a book of writing exercises from Dos Gatos Press. She is editor and publisher of Naugatuck River Review, a journal of narrative poetry.
Barry Hellman is the author of a new chapbook, The King of Newark (Finishing Line Press, 2011). His poems have appeared in Writer’s Digest, the Aurorean, Ballard Street Poetry Journal, Poetica Magazine, Still Crazy Literary Magazine, and other journals and anthologies. He founded the Writers Group at the Eastham Library, hosts The Chapel in the Pines Poetry Series and co-hosts Poets’ Corner. A clinical psychologist and poet, he has conducted poetry workshops, with such topics as “Writing Poems About Family, Friends, Lovers, and Others.” His website is http://home.comcast.net/~bmhellman
Sandra Kohler’s third collection of poems, Improbable Music (Word Press) was released in May, 2011. Earlier collections are The Ceremonies of Longing (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2003) and The Country of Women (Calyx, 1995). Her poems have appeared in numerous journals, including Beloit Poetry Journal, The New Republic, and Prairie Schooner. Sandra has taught literature and writing from elementary school to university. A resident of Pennsylvania for most of her life, she recently moved to Boston.
