LOCAL HAPPENINGS:

The Gallery of Readers Series presents
Bob Susskind and Julie Olmsted
reading from their recent work
Sunday, November 6, 4 PM
Neilson Library Browsing Room, Smith College
Refreshments will be served.

Bob Susskind writes intensely in short spurts and does not save his pieces on his computer. He has yet to publish a volume of his short poems but loves to speak them out loud to any captive audience. His transcendent nonautobiography has a way of putting him in his place.

A native of the Missouri Ozark Mountains, Julie Olmsted was an actress and cabaret performer in New York City prior to becoming a minister. This December, she will celebrate twenty years in that calling. Julie is married to the genius musician/composer Jeff Olmsted (a Northampton native) and has two college-age children of whom she is very proud. Prior to moving to Northampton last year, she was a columnist for the Dayton Daily News in the Saturday faith section. Fifty-two of those essays appear in her book, Stepping Onto the Invisible Bridge: Courage for Every Season of Your Faith Journey. She has dabbled in poetry writing and recently pledged herself to the task of 30 Poems for Thirty Days, collecting proceeds to benefit the “Center for New Americans,” an organization that helps refugees and immigrants learn to read and speak English. She will be reading from memoirs based on her experience of life growing up in the Ozarks. It is a work in progress called, “Meet the Family.”

The Gallery of Readers series began in 1990 and takes its name from its first location, in Northampton's Forbes Library art gallery. The readers in the series are participants in Robin Barber and Carol Edelstein's Vernon Street Writing Workshops. This year, Carol and Robin have launched the Gallery of Readers Press, a new nonprofit venture intended to provide workshop participants with an opportunity to publish their work.
For more information on other events in the series, and for more of our work, please visit http://www.galleryofreaders.org/.

Friday, October 28, 8pm
17 Kellogg Ave., Amherst, MA
ELEMENTAL POEMS:
a workshop for beginning to advanced levels
Sat. Oct. 29, 2-4pm,
Forbes Library Community Room
In this free workshop we'll explore the basic
elements from which poems (and all creative expression) arise.
As Maya Angelou has said: Everything in the
universe has rhythm. Everything dances.
In addition to writing together we'll discuss:
What sparks the poem? (Fire); What are the poem's roots?
(Earth: Metal & Wood); How does the poem's language flow?
(Water); What gives the poem voice? (Wind)
Seating is limited. Pre-registration required by calling
413-587-1011 or stopping by the library's main desk.
Please wear comfortable clothing as we'll be doing some
very simple movement to focus individual and group energy.
Bring pen & paper, curiosity, and a short poem to share
(your own or someone else's).
Janet E. Aalfs, 7th degree black belt and former poet laureate
of Northampton, MA, directs Valley Women's Martial Arts:
Institute for Healing and Violence-Prevention
Strategies, founded in 1977. Her worldwide peace-making,
teaching and performance of poetry and movement arts
includes the Dodge Festival in New Jersey, Split This Rock
in Washington DC, an artist/teaching exchange in
Cape Town, South Africa...Her writing has appeared in
numerous journals and anthologies, and her most recent
book of poems is Bird of a Thousand Eyes, Levellers Press.

poets highlighted in the 2007 film “Louder Than a Bomb” about the annual national
teen poetry slam in Chicago.

Performers must sign up in advance before Nov. 15. Prizes will be awarded to every performer. There will also be open mic time for audience participation.

POETRY A LA CARTE RADIO SHOW

on WMUA-Amherst 91.1 FM
Mondays from 6:00 to 6:30pm
WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule.
Streamed live at http://www.wmua.org/.
The program, hosted by Daisy Mathias, includes reading aloud from past and contemporary poets, and occasionally features live interview and poetry-reading with a local poet.

Poetry at the Leverett Library
