New! Free Poetry Workshop!
Poetry of the Senses: Writing the Imperfect Poem
Wednesdays, September 5 – October 24, 7-9 p.m.
at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, 525 South Pleasant Street, Amherst
“... irregular perfection, the imperfect perfection of the plant and of the insect ...” This aphorism by Octavio Paz will inspire our eight weeks of writing, observing, and exploring together. Play with language, strengthen your writing, and create new work through a combination of in-the-moment exercises, selected reading, and compassionate critique. Encounters with various species of poems and ideas will inspire your creativity as we explore diversity in writing and in nature. This workshop is open and suitable for experienced poets, new writers, and anyone with a sense of adventure.
There is no charge but pre-registration is required. Please call 413-695-8251 (evenings) or e-mail with questions and to register.
Kathryn (Kat) Good-Schiff is a poet, prose writer, and student in the M.F.A. in Writing program of Goddard College. She has taught poetry workshops to children and teenagers, and is excited to branch out into teaching adults. Her writing has appeared in various journals and magazines, including Kalliope and Ithaca College Quarterly.
Women's Science Fiction/Fantasy Writing Group
Have you been writing science fiction or fantasy, and want a supportive
environment to get feedback on your writing? Do you want encouragement
and support to write? Have you thought about writing scifi or fantasy,
but haven't yet tried it?
We want to form a peer group of women in the Pioneer Valley who are
interested in delving into science fiction and/or fantasy writing. We
would meet regularly to write and share our writing and ideas.

Award Winning Poet Moira Linehan
will read from her new book of poetry If No Moon at Stockbridge Booksellers.
Saturday, August 11, 2007
If No Moon by award-winning author Moira Linehan documents the effects of profound loss and the dark withdrawal into grief. Wherever the author turns—the landscape of her backyard in Massachusetts, a Trappist monastery in Kentucky, the museums of Florence, or the cliffs of Inishmor in Ireland—she sees only the geography of emptiness. Crossovers between craft and art, form and voice, knitting and memory, recur throughout the poems. Lying within the tradition of narrative poetry, elegy, and the lyric, the collection reveals the mysterious journey of return. Coming full circle to find again the lyrical and the transcendent within the everyday, beauty eventually wins out. If No Moon, accessible to all who have or will experience loss, is the voice of one who has come to understand that there is no other work but starting over.

What’s Blair been doing since he won the 2003 National Poetry Slam Individual Championship by singing opera on the finals stage? Between winning Detroit’s Best Folk Artist award, featuring on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, and producing his own one-man show, this multi-talented artist has also been touring the U.S. and South Africa with his poetry and music. A remarkable performance poet and folk musician, this is Blair’s second feature at the Cantab in as many years; come and welcome him back in what will surely be a standing-room only show.
Doors for the show open at 7:30. The open mic begins at 8:00, the feature performs at approximately 9:30, and an open poetry slam follows. The show is 18+ (ID required) and the cover charge is $3.

Legendary Boston Poet Jack Powers Celebrates 70th.
On Sept 15, 2007 at 5P.M
at the International Community Church in Allston (30 Gordon St.)
celebrated poet Jack Powers will celebrate his 70th birthday
with a potluck dinner and reading.
Jack Powers is the founder of Boston’s legendary “Stone Soup Poets.” Founded in 1971 at the Charles Meeting House on Beacon Hill in Boston, Powers has lead this venue of readings, activism and publishing for well over thirty years. Powers was also influential in establishing the Beacon Hill Free School in the 1970’s, which encouraged people to teach and participate in educational courses for no charge.
Stone Soup Poets is almost as well known for its publishing history. Powers has published over 80 titles , including Powers’ personal favorite “Jack of Hearts,” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Powers has also published such poets under the Stone Soup imprint as the award-winning Franny Lindsay, and the late Black Mountain School poet John Wieners.
Powers has jumpstarted the careers of many well-known poets including the small press doyenne Lyn Lifshin. Folks like Beat bad boy Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Bly have passed through Stone Soup’s poetic portal.
Stone Soup Poets has been housed for the last several years at the Out of the Blue Art Gallery in Cambridge, Mass. It meets every Monday at 8PM, and carries on the proud tradition with the help of poet Chad Parenteau.
The well-known Boston street artist and activist Sidewalk Sam, as well as Doug Holder of the Ibbetson Street Press, Rev. Lorraine Cleaves Anderson of the International Community Church, and Margaret Nairn president of Collaborative Artworks Inc, are organizing the celebration.
The reading and potluck dinner will have music provided by Boston -area poet and singer/songwriter Jennifer Matthews, as well as Powers’ sons.
All friends and acquaintances, and anyone who has been touched by Jack in his long literary outreach are invited to come. Bring a poem, a dish for the potluck, and a friend!

the Poetry Session at O’Shea’s
THE CAPE GETS ITS VOICE BACK
Every Third Thursday! The Poetry Session at O’Shea’s
is a free monthly all-ages open mic for poets and lovers
of poetry held in the Back Room at O’Shea’s Olde Inne.
348 Main Street (Route 28) in the village of West Dennis.
Christine Rathbun Reads at O'Shea's this Thursday.
August 16th, 2007
Please join your hosts Gregory Hischak and Robin Clarke for the Poetry Session at O’Shea’s. The usual open mic & visiting poets showcase happens this week and if you're not there then Robin and Greg will just have to read the phonebook to each other. The rich tradition of poetry on Cape Cod and the excitement of live spoken word come together like chocolate and peanut butter this month with Poet and Performer Christine Rathbun. Christine’s one-woman show Giant Women, recently premiered at Harwich Winter Theatrek.
Christine Rathbun is a writer and performer living on Cape Cod since 1989. Her acclaimed play, Reconstruction, or How I Learned to Pay Attention, an extraordinary chronicle of one woman's breast cancer odyssey, had its Boston premier in 2005 and has since been performed more than 30 times across New England. Her latest play, Giant Women, recently premiered at Harwich Winter Theatre. Both works have been named as Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant Finalists (in 2004 & 2006). As a performer, she is a monologuist in the tradition of Spalding Gray. As a writer, she is a poet whose work begins as narrative poems which are then shaped as performance pieces, becoming chapters in the larger story. She writes and rehearses in her car on her daily commute to and from Fall River (which is easier than it sounds, though sometimes in performance she is tempted to honk the horn). Christine lives in Sandwich with her splendid daughter, Marney, and her helpmeet and sculptor, Michael.
