Arvind Krishna Mehrotra was born in Lahore and educated
at the universities of Allahabad and Bombay. The journal
Fulcrum has said that his poems are “coded messages from
the unconscious, but [that] there is an exceedingly conscious
hand that crafts them.” A History of Indian Literature in English,
which he edited, was awarded the Choice magazine’s Outstanding
Academic Title of the Year. Translator from the Prakrit, and
author of four collections of poems, including, most recently
The Transfiguring Places, Mehrotra is Professor of English
and Chair of the Department at the University of Allahabad.
His visit to Smith is sponsored by the departments of Philosophy,
English, and Comparative Literature.

Franklin County poets, invites Western Mass poets to apply for
membership. To do so, submit three copies of a chapbook
manuscript (about 28 pages of poems), plus a brief bio. Include in the
bio any collective or group work you've been involved in, or special
skills you have related to publicity and/or publishing.

Membership requires a non-refundable $500 investment (payable
over time, if necessary), a three-year work commitment of
approximately 8-10 hours of work per month , and the

An informal Greenfield community group has announced the first of a series of open microphone sessions for writers on Thursday, October 2, 7:00 P.M., at Bart’s Café of Greenfield, 286 Main St. Subsequent open microphone meetings will occur on the first Thursday of each month.

Sessions will consist of a sign up for participants at 6:45 P.M., a 7:00 presentation by a previously selected “Featured Reader” and five minute reading slots for participants.

Dr. Larry Fader, one of the group’s organizers, described the series as “An opportunity to promote writing for people of varying degrees of accomplishment. The fourth event of the upstreet reading tour, with readers to be announced,
will take place at Chapters on Thursday, October 16, as part of Pittsfield's
Third Thursday series.

Refreshments will be available, and admission is free and open to thepublic.

Free Writing Workshop at Chapters Bookstore
Vivian Dorsel, editor/publisher of the literary magazine upstreet, will conduct a free writing workshop for adults in connection with The Big Read: To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. The workshop will be held at Chapters Bookstore, 78 North Street, Pittsfield. Writers may choose one of two sessions: Monday, October 20, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., or Saturday, October 25, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Harper Lee’s novel is told from the perspective of a reminiscent narrator. This workshop is for fiction and creative nonfiction writers of all levels who would like to use this narrative approach in their own work. Through selected readings and exercises, participants will examine how other fiction and memoir writers have used the reminiscent narrator, and try using it themselves.
Vivian Dorsel, who was managing editor of The Berkshire Review for eight years, holds an MFA in Fiction Writing from Vermont College, and her work has appeared in several publications. She teaches writing workshops at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and was writing workshop coordinator for Pittsfield READS, Pittsfield’s first community reading project, earlier this year.

This forum will host a variety of short stories, poetic compilations,

via recitation and distribution and should be prepared to accept
constructive feedback and be able to, in return, deliver such

Ryk McIntyre has been a presence on the Boston Poetry scene since the 1980's. He is a Co-host at The Cantab Poetry Reading in Cambridge, MA and GotPoetry Live! in Providence, RI. He has toured nationally and in Canada, opening for acts as varied as Leon Redbone, Andrei Codrescu and Jim Carroll. McIntyre read at venues such as Boston's ICA, New York's New School and Lollapalooza 1994. He was featured at the very first "Legends Of Slam" showcase reading at NPS 2006. He has been published in Short-Fuse-An Anthology Of New Fusion Poets, 100 Poets Against The New World Order, Nth Magazine and The Worcester Review.

Poet and journalist Victor D. Infante hosts The Eclectic Word, an

The four poets represent a range of national backgrounds
and come from several regions of the United States.

- Kazim Ali teaches at Oberlin College and at the University of Southern Maine. He is the author of two books of poetry and a novel.

- Hayan Charara teaches at LaGuardia Community College in New York City. His books reflect his strong family relationships and unflinching view of his world.

- Deema Shehabi is a Palestinian-American whose poetry has appeared in anthologies and literary journals. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

- Alise Alousi has worked with children and teens for over fifteen years, most recently as a writer-in-residence in the Detroit Public Schools through the Inside/Out Literary Arts Project.

The Best of 25 Years of Italian Americana" - 8 p.m.
Carol Bonomo Albright has been editor-in-chief of Italian Americana for nearly 20 years. She has published numerous articles and reviews in various professional journals, including the Journal of American Ethnic History and MELUS. She also teaches Italian American Studies at Harvard University Extension School.
Dennis Barone is the author of twelve books, including a collection of selected poems, Separate Objects (Left Hand Books, 1998), the novella, God’s Whisper (Spuyten Duyvil, 2005) and a book of microfictions, North Arrow (Quale Press, 2007). He is professor of English and director of American Studies at Saint Joseph College.

Featured Musicians - 7 p.m.
Jazz duo with Norman Johnson, guitar, and Don Wallace, bass, will perform a set of jazz standards. Johnson has performed with such notables as Dave Brubeck and Houston Person and owns his own recording studio, where he has engineered, produced, and performed on numerous CDs for local and national artists. Wallace earned a performance degree from Hartt College of Music and has been a studio bass player in demand for more than ten years.

"Host's Night" returns On October 16 when we feature series director and co-host, Marilyn Johnston. She will be reading from her first full-length book, Silk Fist Songs, published by Antrim House Books (April 2008). Her work has been published in many journals, including Worcester Review and the South Carolina Review and has garnered several Pushcart nominations. Her chapbook, Against Disappearance, was published as a finalist for the Redgreene Press Poetry Prize, 2001. Open Mike Theme: "Identity Journey"

The local talent continues on November 20 with acclaimed poet and Duncaster resident, Arlene Swift Jones. She has authored two collections of poetry, Deenewood, A Sequence and Pomegranate Wine, both by Turning Point Books. Her honors include the Frances Shaw Fellowship at Ragdale, a fellowship at MacDowell, and Academy of American Poets Prize. One critic says of Pomegranate Wine that it is "instilled with the glory of Paradise, albeit lost, and has at its heart a still small voice of hope prevailing on the far side of endurance..." Open mike theme: "Healing"

December 4 enjoy the holidays with a creative father/son duo-- the dad is a prize-winning poet and the son is a talented singer, composer, keyboardist. Poet John Surowiecki has had two books published, The Hat City after Men Stopped Wearing Hats (Word Works, 2007) and Watching Cartoons before Attending a Funeral (White Pine Press, 2003), as well as five chapbooks. He is the winner of many prizes, including the Poetry Foundationʼs Pegasus Award for his verse drama, My Nose and Me, and the Pablo Neruda Prize. Singer John E. Surowiecki has played his own songs in countless venues around eastern Connecticut. His style leans toward classic rock, with emphasis on eloquence, musicianship, and strong melody line. His music has a great appeal across the generations. Open mike theme: "Family"

On Oct 29 at 6 PM, the Faxon Library will host a poetry reading and publication party for two area poets who have recently published their first volumes of poetry

Connie Magnan-Albrizio of Windsor will read from her new publication LION’S TOOTH, recently published by Raffoler Publishing.

June Sidran Mandelkern of West Hartford will read from her new work REFLECTIONS, just published by Tall Trees Press.

Both Connie and June are founding members of the Faxon Poets Group—which began at the Faxon Library five years ago. Copies of both titles will be available for sale and signing. Attendees are also invited to participate in an open mic session which will follow the main event.

Dick Allen: From Buddha to Elvis, leading poet, Allen, retired professor of English at the University of Bridgeport, brings his newest book, Present Vanishing: Poems, Sarabande Books, as 7th in the collection of his books and one among many publications and awards including the Pushcart Prize. LEMON ANDERSEN coming to THE BUSHNELL (tickets on sale in August)
On Monday evening, December 1, poet Lemon Andersen will bring his jarring coming of age memoir to life at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Literature to Life series, a creation of The American Place Theatre in New York. Lemon’s portrait of a modern “manchild” on a tumultuous journey of self-discovery is performed in his unique voice, weaving drama with urban poetry. His true story of finding passion and purpose in life, against all odds, exposes the human experience behind the most influential and prevalent cultural movement of our time, commonly referred to as hip-hop.

Lemon Andersen is a critically acclaimed poet best known for his Tony Award winning work in Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and HBO. Lemon’s memoir (working titles The Beautiful Struggle or County of Kings) is a work in progress and has not yet been published.

New Hampshire Finnish Poetry Fest (yes, it's far, but it's sooo cool!)

Forging the Sky, Singing of the Sampo
The Poetry Society of NH will celebrate the Kalevala, the Finnish National epic, with poetry music, and Runeberg’s tarts and other Finnish pastries on October 11th beginning at 6PM at artstream, 56 North Main Street, Rochester, NH. Music will be performed by the Maine Kanteles on Finnish lapharps, the national musical instrument of Finland. The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact the
The Kalevala was compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century from folk tunes or runo songs. The meter of these songs is trochaic tetrameter, made familiar to us by Longfellow, a contemporary of Lönnrot, in his Song of Hiawatha. Tolkien based his lyrical language of Middle Earth’s elves on the Finnish he read in the Kalevala. The themes of the Kalevala are typical of such stories and follow the lines of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey, with the birth of the hero, the battles between good and evil, the pursuit of a sacred object (the Sampo), shape shifting, demons, and magic. However, the heroism celebrated in this epic comes not from physical strength, but through magical songs.
The Poetry Society of NH is a non profit, state-wide membership organization dedicated to the promotion of poetry. The society publishes the quarterly journal The Poets Touchstone, sponsors poetry contests and hosts poetry readings and workshops. The society also publishes anthologies, most recently The 2008 Poets Guide to NH and The Other Side of Sorrow, Poets Speak Out About Conflict, War and Peace, and the occasional chapbook.
