Word in the Valley and Beyond
Flute player and poet Eddie Bartók-Baratta
is back at the Friends Meetinghouse,
43 Center Street,
Northampton
Sunday, September 9, 2007, at 7 p.m.
Get the real story behind Humpty Dumpty’s tragic fall from the little man himself. Learn about the Red Thread that connects us all. See Ronald Reagan meet the Cowardly Lion. With more than two hundred poems published in the finest magazines—Boston Reveiew, BOMB, Harvard Review, and Ploughshares among them—Eddie Bartók-Baratta becomes each movement and character, weaving new, original flute compositions into his poems recited from memory. “Microcosmic, macroscosmic, and brilliant,” says Northampton resident Jesse Adams. Katy Ryan of West Virginia University says, “Eddie brings me lyrically, and without pretense, back to a world of hope and promise.” “Powerful and fascinating,” says Bin Ramke of Denver Quarterly This event will also be a benefit for Valley Free Radio, 103.3 FM, Northampton’s own independent radio station, which went on the air two years ago, and is celebrating its second anniversary. A small donation will be accepted at the door, although no one will be turned away.
as at all Eddie Bartók-Baratta events, books will be accepted and donated to the local prison library. For more info., contact: Eddie at 413.584.8187

Online Writing Group for Women
Swirl and Swing is a free, private, online women’s writing group. We are a small group looking to recruit a few new members. We offer a rich variety of writing activities, including weekly and monthly assignments. In addition, we have a featured writer section each month that allows members an opportunity to work and seek feedback on additional writing projects.
Our members work in a variety of forms, including poetry, fiction, children’s literature, and memoir. We have members in the Western Massachusetts and New England area, but our members are spread throughout the U.S. Our mission is to foster a small but vibrant community of writers; to share our work, joys and frustrations; to encourage and inspire each other; and to serve as sounding boards and sources of constructive criticism. We welcome writers of every stripe and flavor.
If you’re interested in applying, please send a brief bio and a sample of three poems or pieces of short fiction that are representative of your work to the attention of Ingrid at .
Women's Science Fiction/Fantasy Writing Group
Have you been writing science fiction or fantasy, and want a supportive
environment to get feedback on your writing? Do you want encouragement
and support to write? Have you thought about writing scifi or fantasy,
but haven't yet tried it?
We want to form a peer group of women in the Pioneer Valley who are
interested in delving into science fiction and/or fantasy writing. We
would meet regularly to write and share our writing and ideas.

THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Beginning August 17th, poet and journalist Victor D. Infante will host The Eclectic Word, an Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets, satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd, the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.
The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month, as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience. For our inaugural installment Friday, I'll be joined by Poetry Slam Inc. President Scott Woods, poet Susan B.A. Somers-Willett, author of the book Roam and the forthcoming book of criticism, The Cultural Politics of Slam Poetry: Race and the Rise of Popular Verse in America, and Marc Smith, founder of the poetry slam for "The Past, Present and Future of Slam."
Future shows:
On Friday, Sept. 7th, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, we're going to change gears completely, with guests Allyson Beatrice, author of Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby? and Jillian Venters, author of the online column Gothic Charm School, for an installment we're calling "Manners and the Undead."
And on Friday, Sept. 21st, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, we'll be joined by David A. Griffith, author of A Good War is Hard to Find, and Wayne Koestenbaum, author of Hotel Theory, for "A Spotlight on Soft Skull Press."
So give it a listen! It's going to be a blast!

World-Famous Performance Poets Perform at Boston’s Paradise Lounge
On Saturday, September 29, the Boston Poetry Slam will present a special one-night engagement of Solomon Sparrow’s Electric Whale Revival. This group of four of the world’s best-known slam poets will appear at the Paradise Lounge in Boston as part of their coast-to-coast one-month tour.
Buddy Wakefield, Dan Leamen, Derrick Brown, and Mike McGee have each toured the country individually, winning myriad poetry slam titles and innumerable hearts along the way, but this tour is the only chance to see these four very different poetic voices on the stage together.
In addition, this one-time event will showcase two poet/folk musicians: Blair from Detroit and local Shira Erlichman. These two prominent poets will only appear with the Revival for this one Boston show.
Collectively, the poets in this show represent every National and World Poetry Slam since 2003, save one. Any one of these artists would be enough to pack a poetry house to the gills; all six of them are likely to burn the place down.
Doors for this show open at 6:00. Blair will perform at 7:00, followed by shira e. and the tiny tornadoes. The Revival takes the stage at 8:30 sharp. The show is 18+.
Tickets may be purchased at the Paradise box office or online at http://thedise.tickets.musictoday.com/. Ticket cost is $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

Longtime poet Tony Brown has probably been tired of slamming since before you heard of the poetry slam, and bassist Steven Cafaro isn’t even as old as the movement itself. Together, this unlikely pair forms Duende, a poetry/music duo that breathes new life into the old Beat sound.

Corrina Bain hasn’t read at the Cantab for almost two years, since her going-away fundraising feature for her trip to work in Mozambique. Now back in the States, this remarkable poet and activist is still working, writing, and performing with an intensity most of us could never hope to match. Come welcome Corrina and her new work back to the country.

Legendary Boston Poet Jack Powers Celebrates 70th.
On Sept 15, 2007 at 5P.M
at the International Community Church in Allston (30 Gordon St.)
celebrated poet Jack Powers will celebrate his 70th birthday
with a potluck dinner and reading.
Jack Powers is the founder of Boston’s legendary “Stone Soup Poets.” Founded in 1971 at the Charles Meeting House on Beacon Hill in Boston, Powers has lead this venue of readings, activism and publishing for well over thirty years. Powers was also influential in establishing the Beacon Hill Free School in the 1970’s, which encouraged people to teach and participate in educational courses for no charge.
Stone Soup Poets is almost as well known for its publishing history. Powers has published over 80 titles , including Powers’ personal favorite “Jack of Hearts,” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Powers has also published such poets under the Stone Soup imprint as the award-winning Franny Lindsay, and the late Black Mountain School poet John Wieners.
Powers has jumpstarted the careers of many well-known poets including the small press doyenne Lyn Lifshin. Folks like Beat bad boy Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Bly have passed through Stone Soup’s poetic portal.
Stone Soup Poets has been housed for the last several years at the Out of the Blue Art Gallery in Cambridge, Mass. It meets every Monday at 8PM, and carries on the proud tradition with the help of poet Chad Parenteau.
The well-known Boston street artist and activist Sidewalk Sam, as well as Doug Holder of the Ibbetson Street Press, Rev. Lorraine Cleaves Anderson of the International Community Church, and Margaret Nairn president of Collaborative Artworks Inc, are organizing the celebration.
The reading and potluck dinner will have music provided by Boston -area poet and singer/songwriter Jennifer Matthews, as well as Powers’ sons.
All friends and acquaintances, and anyone who has been touched by Jack in his long literary outreach are invited to come. Bring a poem, a dish for the potluck, and a friend!
