Word in the Valley and Beyond

3-Day Novelists
Forbes Library, Coolidge Museum
Wednesday October 22, 2008
7:00 PM

Imagine sitting down and writing for three days straight. What would you
end up with? Would you be able to do it? Listen to local writers Rob
Andrews, Kathryn Good-Schiff and Nancy Janoson read from the manuscripts
they produced during this year's 3-Day Novel contest and tell tales of
creative endurance.

About the writers:

Rob Andrews has been writing off and on since he won a silver
dollar in a jingle contest sponsored by Captain Midnight when he was 9
years old. He has written with Patricia Lee Lewis and Jan Sadler and
enjoys writing fiction. Rob lives in East Longmeadow, MA.
The title of his 3-Day Novel manuscript is
A Twisted Journey, a strange tale of an artist, murder,
mental illness, love and expressing creativity.

Kathryn Good-Schiff holds an MFA in poetry from Goddard College,
where she edited The Pitkin Review, and a BA in writing and
environmental studies from Hampshire College.
The 3-Day Novel contest was her first experience of writing fiction,
and it felt exactly like doing that 8-mile race when she was a
novice runner. Her work has been published in Kalliope, The Equinox,
Flutter, Twelve Stories, and other journals.
She traveled the country and the world before taking up
residence in western Massachusetts, where she lives with her partner and
their assorted animals.
She blogs about writing and visual art at
http://www.dragonsmeow.blogspot.com/

Adventures Underground examines ancient mythical characters who
have somehow found themselves in 21st century America. Orpheus, Lot, andPersephone trades stories of life and love before and after death, over
beer and cappuccinos. There is plenty of vaudeville piano music and
abstract expressionist painting, too. This is a work in progress, so
it's anyone's guess how this story "ends."

Nancy Janoson lived in Puerto Rico for 25 years, after which she
moved to Japan and then Germany. She has worked as a professional
musician and music teacher and still plays jazz and classical on the
flute and saxophone. She moved to the valley two years ago, retired, and
is still playing music. She was first chair woodwind in the PACE
production of West Side Story last Fall. Janoson says, "I have always
loved to write and I love pressure, so the 3-Day was fun for me."

Her story takes place in Puerto Rico in the late 1970's. It
involves love, politics, murder, and music set against a Caribbean
background. The 3-Day manuscript is a sketch for the novel she
hopes to complete this year.

Location: Coolidge Museum

Growing Younger Toward Death Every Day: Poetry To Inspire Our Lives"
is a new group that will focus on recorded poet David Whyte reciting and discussing his own and others' poetry, and inspiring us to live a fully present, authentic, and engaged life. This group will meet every two weeks from November to May, beginning Monday Nov.17, at a participant's home in Greenfield. We will listen to parts of Whyte's CDs, then discuss his message and how it applies to our lives. His line "Growing younger toward death every day" appears in his best-known poem, 'The Faces at Braga', about his life-changing experience in an old Buddhist Temple high in the Himalayas. Participants can also bring and share poems, prose, songs, or other material created by themselves or others, that moves and inspires them deeply.
There will also be opportunities to respond to Whyte's poetry and commentary through creative writing.

David Whyte is a British/Irish poet, author, and public speaker who has lived in the Seattle area for over 25 years. He travels the country and world reading his and others' poetry, and galvanizing listeners to explore their own poetic sensibilities and insights. He has published 5 books of poetry, and recorded 12 CDs of various readings and talks he's given. He has a unique, engaging, even captivating style of speaking and story-telling that brings the poetry alive and makes it accessible. His work can be seen on his website at www.manyrivers.com. Some of his CDs that we will use are: "The Poetry of Self-Compassion"; "A Change for the Better: Poetry and the Re-imagination of Mid-life"; "Faithful To All Things: Buddhism and the Western Poetic Imagination"; and "Thresholds: Navigating the Difficult Transitions of Life". Some of his recent poetry books include "Everything Is Waiting For You" and "The House of Belonging".And just to add a little more spice to this poetic soup, we'll sometimes read and discuss the poems and rich commentary in the excellent series of recent books edited by Roger Housden, such as Ten Poems To Set You Free, Ten Poems To Open Your Heart, and Ten Poems To Change Your Life. John Berkowitz, 35-year resident of Putney, VT and recently moved to Shelburne, MA, is a lover of poetry and life who has been deeply moved and influenced by Whyte's work. He wants to share with others Whyte's wisdom, humor, and exploration through poetry of the meaning of our life's journey.
There is no cost for the group other than the option to buy some of Whyte's CDs. The dates and location of future meetings can be determined by those participants at the first group and others interested in attending.

Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets,
satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be
stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd,
the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month,
as part of
The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the
shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience.
So give it a listen! It's going to be a blast!

LAST ARTSPEAK at PEABERRY'S CAFE
Saturday October 25, 7:30-9:30
After six months of this wonderful experiment of poetry, music, community and collective creation, I regret to announce that ArtSpeak is coming to an end. This month, on October 25th, we will celebrate art together, at least in this configuration and at this venue, for the last time.
October 25th
7:30-9:30
Peaberry's Cafe
712 Hopmeadow St
Simsbury CT 06070

This is not due to any artistic failing or lack of support; each and every ArtSpeak was a truly singular and inspiring event. Peaberry's Cafe, due in part to the current economic environment in which we all must exist, will be closing early on Saturdays beginning in November. Naturally, this eliminates all Saturday night events held here, including the beloved ArtSpeak.

I would like to send a proverbial "shout out" to all the fabulous artists of which ArtSpeak was comprised.

I vigorously thank all the poets who eagerly shared their work each month. You have all, individually and collectively, encouraged me greatly. You have taught me that poetry is a living organism and that the spirit of truth, integrity, and exploration is thriving. Please know that I consider you keepers of the flame so to speak, and I value every moment we shared in this experiment.

I would also like to very sincerely thank the musicians who brought their ingenuity, spontaneity, and musical prowess to ArtSpeak. To every musician who dropped in occasionally to share your art, it was a great pleasure to have you. To Rob, Evan, and Martin, our "house" band, I can not fully express my gratitude. Thank you for supporting this idea figuratively and literally. Your encouragement contributed largely to the momentum of this event and your music created a cohesive and open atmosphere in which this event thrived. For those of you who never got the chance to hear these excellent musicians, here is a link to some music they recorded at Peaberry's: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=871968

Do not let this event go gentle into that good night, but let it burn and rave, and go out with song and dance and poetry. May the last of the ArtSpeaks honor the unforgettable nature of this event.

Love and Peace to all,
Leanne

HARTFORD HAPPENINGS

LEMON ANDERSEN coming to THE BUSHNELL (tickets on sale in August)
On Monday evening, December 1, poet Lemon Andersen will bring his jarring coming of age memoir to life at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Literature to Life series, a creation of The American Place Theatre in New York. Lemon’s portrait of a modern “manchild” on a tumultuous journey of self-discovery is performed in his unique voice, weaving drama with urban poetry. His true story of finding passion and purpose in life, against all odds, exposes the human experience behind the most influential and prevalent cultural movement of our time, commonly referred to as hip-hop.

Lemon Andersen is a critically acclaimed poet best known for his Tony Award winning work in Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and HBO. Lemon’s memoir (working titles The Beautiful Struggle or County of Kings) is a work in progress and has not yet been published.

• Wednesday, October 29 If the slam world has produced a humble, honest, political, poignant rockstar, it’s Andrea Gibson. Perennial finalist at both Nationals and Individuals, she took her first (long-overdue!) indy title at this spring’s WOWPS in Detroit and signed with WriteBloody Publishing in the same year. One of the voices who makes poetry slam as we know it. Open slam in the 8x8 series.

Open poetry slam in the 8x8 series.

• Wednesday, November 12
