He may have coached the 2004 Hampshire/Smith College Unions slam team. He's been writing for twelve years and designed for five, and worked with poet Martín Espada in several classrooms. His undergraduate thesis, Back Away Closer, was a 78-page hand-bound poem-book exploring the loss of home and the search for identity. For a brief time he served as Art Director for a local Albuquerque culture/life magazine.

Monday, April 30 - Ashlee Hazeltine and Bob Hoey (Westfield State College student poets.
Ashlee is the WSC slam champion!)

We're now booking features for July and August!

Wide Awake Writing: Experiments of Attention
a Workshop with Anne Waldman

413-339-4954 www.rowecenter.org
Register Online
https://rowecenter.qwknetllc.com/cgi-bin/RoweCCC/Register-conference.pl?conference
Join internationally recognized poet and teacher Anne Waldman for an
exciting foray into "experiments of attention," which will include work with
journals, dreams, performance strategies, and traditional and invented
forms. For beginners as well as accomplished writers, Anne brings a vast
array of gnosis and experience to working with the writer's mind.
We will participate in writing exercises that focus on ritual
objects and memory, the erasure of the dominant first person "I", narratives
of intervention, practices that involve the minute particulars of sense
perception and investigation, surrealist cut-ups, collaboration, and oral
modes of presentation-the litany, chorale, Sprechstimme (spoke-sung
performance). On Saturday night, we hope to have a public performance with
Anne, a noted performer of her own work.
Anne Waldman, co-founder, with Beat legend Allen Ginsberg, of the
Jack Kerouac School at the Buddhist-inspired Naropa University, is
Distinguished Professor and Chair of Naropa's celebrated Summer Writing
Program and core faculty member of New England College's MFA program. She
was the director of the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery. A
poet, performer, professor, curator, and cultural activist, she is author
and editor of over 40 books and interviews, including Fast Speaking Woman,
Vow to Poetry, Marriage: A Sentence, In the Room of Never Grieve, and her
most recent book of essays and poems, Outrider. She inherited the mantle of
the Beats (Allen Ginsberg called her his "spiritual wife") and the New York
School (Frank O'Hara told her to "work for inspiration, not money"). She has
collaborated with students, dancers, videographers, visual artists,
musicians, composers. She has received numerous awards, prizes, and
residencies and has taught at universities, colleges, and centers here and
abroad.

The FallEQUiNOX
Greetings to you all: got a story to tell? in rhyme, meter or prose -- maybe chapter and verse too? lyrics perhaps with some notation, or in images painted or photoed. I would like to add reviews to this issue; I hope to have space for three to five brief ones. Please share this information with fellow creatives Mo (Note that "non-fiction" can include travel tales, takes on the creative life, social/political commentary, humor and satire too.)

published by Ginger Cat Press:
interesting tales for curious readers
102 Mechanic Street, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370
[email protected]
Submission Guidelines
Submission limits
Poems, lyrics: Three to five poems or lyrics with music notation (approx 50 lines/spaces max),
and/or Fiction: 2-3 short (250-500 words double-spaced) fictions, and/or
Non-fiction: 2-3 concise (500-1000 words double-spaced) non-fictions. and/or
Art/photos: line art, block prints preferably black/white suitable for 5x7 or less sizing.
NEW: Reviews of journals, books, film: incisive but fair, 250-300 words.

Starting in 2007 the journal will be published annually, in the Fall of the year. There is no guarantee that publication will be timely since natural and man-made disasters, illness, or the occasional disorganized spell may intervene.

Submission deadline: June 1st
NOTE: Electronic submissions preferred, as it saves me time. Either paste into e-mail or attach a .doc file; please, NO zip or mime files Be sure to check grammar, punctuation, line breaks, paragraphing, apt use of transitions, effective word choice etc etc. Include your full name on every page of hardcopy submissions, in case materials flutter wildly around the room, the way parakeets do, and must be recaptured and restored to their original order and completeness. Always keep a copy for your records in case they are lost in transmission and because your submitted copy will not be returned. Most, but not all edits, will be subject to author’s approval.
THEMES/GENRES: The Equinox is eclectic thematically. Its goal is to offer a forum for the many voices of our region, even at the risk of “cacophony.” Political commentary, controversial topics handled with care, history, humor, etc are all welcomed as is art work, music notations and lyrics and more. Acceptance depends totally on the subjective, arbitrary decision of the editor, who is a sucker for a thoughtful message crafted into life with well-chosen words and imagry. Simple charm or complex angst — & all points between — equally considered.
Short stories and non-fiction are especially encouraged to maintain a prosaic balance to the poetics; else wise, the excess of paddling poets will have our literary vessel turning in circles. And the wordsmiths would benefit from the tuneful and artful contributions of those who craft meaning from sounds and sights.
Previously published work OK; author responsible for obtaining written permissions. Never before published writers are welcome. Contributors’ rewards are fame and one free copy; additional copies at cost or by donation. This represents a change in policy: contributors were awarded two free copies of the biannual issue to which they contributed. The costs of publication, whether biannual or annual, are such that I must be more frugal i.e., less generous; however, in the interests of distribution, I will accept payment on a sliding scale for all copies in excess of the contributor copy -- no reader will be denied!

NOTICE: the Fall Equinox: an excursion of stories, poems, essays, and art an annual, was formerly known as the Equinox:an excursion of stories, poems, and essays a bi-annual production

Now a four-time member, Barbara has toured the world performing poetry both as a solo performer, and as a member of the spoken-word music band, The Fugitives. Known for her ability to mix intellectual poetics with entertaining observations about the quirkier moments of everyday life, Barbara has collaborated with composers, dancers, filmmakers and theater artists, creating smart, funny, and often deeply moving poetry around questions of history, identity, and self-image (Georgia Straight). This Spring, she finished a double major in Art and Culture Studies and Fine and Performing Arts at Simon Fraser University. Her new CD is titled Flusterblush.
