Beth Goren in Amherst
June 14, 7PM at Food for Thought Books, Amherst
RAPIDS, Visions for Body-Mind Centering®,
journeys through essential messages from Body-Mind Centering®
gleaned from the author-photographer’s initial seven years of study
with her pioneering mentor Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen who writes
the Introduction to the book. The thought crystals, forming Rapids’
text, alight on principles of weight and gravity, center and balance,
organs, voice and breath, muscles and joints, evolution, senses,
and brain patterns. They are accompanied by 70 black and white photographs.
Beth will present a reading and booksigning of Rapids
at Food for Thought Books in Amherst
on Thursday evening, June 14th at 7pm.
She will also lead the audience in a writing exercise
based on Rapids’ text. (Refreshments will be served).
Ziji Beth Goren is a poet, writer, photography enthusiast, and workshop facilitator of Body-Mind Centering® and Authentic Voice-Movement practices. She began writing down her dreams and poems in 1972, and gradually these two mediums merged. Beth received three Massachussetts State Arts Lottery awards from 1982-1986 for performance and publication. In 1987, Beth moved to Taos, New Mexico for twelve years, writing with Natalie Goldberg, Renee Gregorio, and at the Frank Waters Foundation. She worked actively with the Society of the Muse of the Southwest, and her poems and writings appear in their 1993 and 1994 Summer Anthologies. Beth’s photographs of nature and petroglyph images were displayed at the Bureau of Land Management’s Visitor Center in 1998. In 2003, 2004, and 2006, her poetry was published in the Patchwork Journal, and articles and photographs have appeared in Contact Quarterly Magazine, Currents Journal, and the Cultural Survival Quarterly. Rapids first and second editions were published in 1986 and 2006.

Sunday June 17
This week we'll hold a just-for-fun Dead Poets Slam for bragging rights and fabulous prizes.
In a regulation poetry slam each performer use their own original work. In the Dead Poets Slam the performers must use the work of a poet who is deceased though their words may live on. We'll throw out the costume rule because what could be cooler than a modern day Milton or faux Plathe taking the stage. Otherwise it's the usual deal - 2 rounds, 3 minute time limit, 5 judges, and so on. Come on down, it's bound to be a hoot!
The Poets' Asylum -- in its fifteenth year of
bringing the best in Performance and Slam poetry
to Central Massachusetts and beyond.

CAMBRIDGE READINGS
Central Square’s world-famous Cantab Lounge
presents performances from local and national poets, as well as a
chance to present your own work in the open mic or poetry slam.
Upcoming features include:
• Wednesday, June 6
Although he’s only been coming to the Cantab for a year,
North Shore poet Artie Moffa has insinuated himself into
nearly every part of the scene. A competitive slammer,
scrupulously honest doorman, and fixture at the one-spot
of the open mic, this self-styled “overdressed new formalist”
is perhaps overdue for his first feature in the home venue.
Artie’s work is everything that is right about the open mic
and poetry slam: honest, hilarious, and heartbreaking by turns,
he’s a poet who knows how to play to the audience and still
maintain his own style and sound.
Doors for the show open at 7:30. The open mic begins at 8:00, the feature performs at approximately 9:30, and an open poetry slam follows. The show is 18+ (ID required) and the cover charge is $3.
