Dr. Ann Charters Chosen as the Westfield
Athenaeum’s First Edwin Smith Family Distinguished Speaker
September 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Ann D. Charters, Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at UCONN, has been chosen by the Board of Directors of the Westfield Athenaeum as the recipient of its first annual Edwin Smith Family Distinguished Speaker Award. Dr. Charters, a scholar of Contemporary American Literature, with special interest in the Beat Generation of writers, will be presenting a lecture entitled “The Renaissance of Jack Kerouac” on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Athenaeum’s Lang Auditorium.
Dr. Charters was friends with Jack Kerouac, the celebrated author of On the Road, The Dharma Bums, Big Sur, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, and Visions of Cody, along with a number of published and unpublished poems. She is the author of a Kerouac: A Biography, as well as Beats and Company, in addition to a number of other books about Kerouac and the Beat writers. She is also the editor of The Beats: Literary Bohemians in Post-War America, The Portable Beat Reader, The Portable Kerouac Reader, the Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac, The Portable Sixties Reader,
and wrote introductions to On the Road and Big Sur. Dr. Charters has written a long list of articles in literary journals and she has spoken extensively about Kerouac and the Beats at conferences and colloquia throughout the U.S. In 2007 – 2008, Dr. Charters participated in a number of events “Celebrating the 50th Birthday of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road.”
Educated at Columbia University and the Univ. of California, Berkeley, Dr. Charters received her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1965. Her dissertation was entitled “Writers in a Landscape: Bryant, Sedgwick, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, Holmes and Wharton in the Massachusetts Berkshires.” She has been a Professor at UCONN since 1978 and is now a Professor Emeritus. Dr. Charters has been a Fulbright Exchange Professor, among other awards, and has established the Ann and Samuel Charters’ Archive of Beat Writers in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library, as well as the Ann and Samuel Charters’ Archive of African-American Secular Music in the Dodd Research Center at the Univ. of Connecticut.
Her talk will focus on the growing interest in Kerouac and his works during the last 20 years. A slide presentation will be part of the talk.
The Edwin Smith Family Distinguished Speaker Award was established in honor of the Edwin Smith family, of Westfield, a remarkable family with strong connections to the Westfield Athenaeum dating back to its founding and early development. The Smith family, including Edwin B. Smith, Edwin J. Smith, Edwin W. Smith and William T. Smith, were prominent members of the Westfield community who helped celebrate Westfield’s 250th Anniversary in 1919 and were instrumental in establishing the Edwin Smith Historical Museum at the Athenaeum in 1927. The Athenaeum is proud to honor and recognize their commitment to the Athenaeum by establishing this award, which will be awarded annually to an historian, scholar or writer who has distinguished him or herself in their field of interest.
The Distinguished Speaker lecture kicks off the Athenaeum’s Fall Lecture Series, which will includes talks by mystery writer Archer Mayer on October 17 (in conjunction with the Westfield State College Guest Lecture Series), by author Carole O’Malley Gaunt on October 21, by actress and writer Saundra Dubow on October 28, by Karen Hardy, the founder of Educate Malawi, Inc., on November 4, by Rails-to-Trails consultant Craig Della Penna on November 18, by Westfield author and baseball historian Dan Genovese on December 2, and by renowned musician and comedian Derek Mann on December 9. The lecture series is free and open to the public and is supported in part by the Friends of the Westfield Athenaeum.

What is Proprioceptive Writing?
Proprioceptive Writing® is a meditative form of writing that allows you to know yourself more fully by exploring on paper the territory of your mind, memory, and emotions. This form of writing helps synthesize emotion and imagination, generating authentic insight and joy. Proprioceptive Writing® is not formal writing, nor is it automatic or stream-of-consciousness writing. A regular, disciplined practice in a quiet environment, this unique method frees the writer within. It will help to:
• Focus awareness and build self-trust
• Write and speak with strength and clarity
• Awaken the senses and emotions
• Bring increased energy and power to the creative process
• Focus and deepen the thought process
Instructor Tzivia Gover is an author, educator and certified Proprioceptive Writing Teacher.

Evening of Art & Poetry
Forbes Library
Wednesday October 7, 2009
7:00 PM
Please join us for an evening of three talented local women who are both
poets and visual artists.
A sculptor, papermaker and poet, Rosalyn Driscoll makes sculptures that
explore the sense of touch, as she collaborates with scientists, artists
and people with visual limitation. Her sculpture has been exhibited in
the US, Europe and Japan; her poems have been published in various
journals and received numerous awards, including the Pablo Neruda Prize
from Nimrod and nomination for a Pushcart Prize.
Trish Crapo is a writer, photographer and collage artist. Her poetry
chapbook, Walk Through Paradise Backwards, was published by the Slate
Roof press in 2004. Her Keys series of collages was featured in the
show, Altered Realities, at Cooler Gallery, White River Junction, VT.
Another series, created in response to the events of September 11th, was
shown at a variety of venues around New England. And recently, one of
her photographs was chosen to be included in Hallmark Museum of
Contemporary Photography’s permanent collection.
Denise Fontaine-Pincince is a graduate of Lesley University’s MFA in
Creative Writing Program where her studies included art with poetry. As
a multi-media artist, she combines acrylic paint, collage and text on
canvas, metal and wood. Her presentation, entitled “Melding Word &
Image: Hardware in Poetry and Paint,” represents pieces from her work
recently displayed at the Crest Hardware Art Show in Brooklyn, New York.
This reading is part of the Seventh Annual Forbes Poetry Series. The
series takes place on the first Wednesday of the month from October to
May. Readings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will

Seating is limited. Pre-registration is required by the library or stopping by the main desk. Registration preference given to people who have not taken a writing workshop at Forbes before

His latest chapbook, The Small Dance, is available online from Scantily Clad Press. Originally from The West, Martin now skims his head on the smoke alarm in his Brooklyn apartment when he's not teaching strange and wonderful young humans in the big city.
Edmund Berrigan is the author of Disarming Matter (Owl Press, 1999) and Glad Stone Children (Farfalla Press, 2008), editor of the Selected Poems of Steve Carey (Sub Press, 2009) and co-editor with Anselm Berrigan and Alice Notley of the Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan (University of California Press, 2005) and a forthcoming Selected Poems of Ted Berrigan from the same press. He also performs music in and around New York under the nom de guerre I Feel Tractor.
Jessica Fiorini is the author of Sea Monster at Night (Goodbye Better, 2007). Her poems have appeared in the Boog City Reader, Lungfull!, the Poetry Project Newsletter, The Brooklyn Rail, and at puppyflowers.com and fieralingue.it. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, and received an MFA from the University of New Orleans in 2008.
__________
Bart’s Bards
We do it again on October 8. Please come and bring friends. We are fortunate to have two featured readers for our October meeting:
Lea Banks is the author of All of Me, a chapbook published by Booksmyth Press. She was a finalist for The Pavel Srut Fellowship in Prague and has had two poems nominated for the 2009 Pushcart Prize. Banks is the founder of the nationally-known Collected Poets Series in Shelburne Falls, MA, editor of Oscillation: Art and Poetry in Motion, an upcoming online journal, was poetry editor of the Equinox, and editorial assistant for the Marlboro Review. She attended New England College’s MFA program, facilitated stroke survivors’ writing workshops, and is a full-time poet, community organizer, freelance editor and writer. Banks has been published in several journals including Poetry Northwest, Slipstream, Diner, and American Poetry Journal. She is very excited to be reading again in Greenfield, the first town she moved to when she came to Massachusetts, all those many moons ago!Cyn J Horton cites black & white television, cowboys and spies as her early influences, spicing her work with a film noir flavor. Trained as a child in the graphic arts, she began journaling on the advice of her oil painting instructor. Poetry became a natural outlet. Born and raised outside Boston, MA, Cyn attended Beloit College and received a degree in Theatre Arts. She moved on to NYC where she broke into the union at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as the first woman ''art handler." After an eight year stint in San Francisco, she returned to New England craving the change of seasons.
Please bring friends and, if the spirit so moves you, something to read of your own.
Warmly,
~Larry Fader

your name on the contact email list. The following month you
get an email reminding you of the upcoming event.
If it’s your first time performing at In Words, Out Words,
you are guaranteed a spot on the roster as long as you reply
to the reminder email. If you’ve performed there before then
you are put into the lottery system and randomly names are selected.
Sometimes there are still slots open at the door.
The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on
for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

Poets Asylum
Sundays:
September 20
This week the Poets' Asylum welcomes Dave Macpherson as our feature. Macpherson is a fixture on the Worcester poetry scene. He might be in front of the mic sharing his unique take on the secret lives of superheroes, classic cars or suburban housewives. He might be helming the once a month Worcester Storytellers. Or he could be quietly deliberating as one of the assistant editors for Ballard Street Poetry Journal. What is certain is that when he steps up to the mic he brings the best words he has to offer. A prolific writer Dave is always finding a new topic to tackle, offering a fresh take on legends, urban myths and the everyday.
Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words.
Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at 6:00 p.m. No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature.
The Dirty Gerund
There's a new poetry reading in town! There will be an open mic every week with a mix of poetry s lams and featured poets.

THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Poet and journalist Victor D. Infante hosts The Eclectic Word, an
Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets,
satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be
stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd,
the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.
The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month,
as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the
shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience.
So give it a listen! It's going to be a blast!

Dennis Barone Reading
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Main Library
Library Meeting Room
A reading by West Hartford’s new Poet Laureate, Dennis Barone
Author of fourteen books, Barone most recently co-edited with West Hartford resident James Finnegan, Visiting Wallace: Poems Inspired by the Life and Work of Wallace Stevens (University of Iowa Press, 2009). In 2008 Quale Press published North Arrow, a collection of seventeen stories that traverse stylistic, emotional, and geographical landscapes. From New Jersey to the Netherlands to abstract poetic terrain, Dennis Barone places his characters in situations where they’re forced to confront the nature of memory, of change, and of finding one’s way in a society that can be hostile to those who circumvent its meager expectations.
The poet Noah Eli Gordon has written: ‘There is a muscularity with which [Barone’s] writing unfolds, an accumulative approach that manages to move each piece through a veritable cornucopia of contrasting images and characters, of sets and props, enlivened by his consistently rhythmic and often speedy prose.’ In 1998 Left Hand Books published his volume of selected poems entitled Separate Objects.
Dennis Barone is a Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Saint Joseph College.
The event is free. Books will be available for purchase
Highly acclaimed novelist will read at fall 2009 series
The Trinity College English Department welcomes Emmanuel Dongala, acclaimed writer and Richard B. Fisher Chair in Natural Sciences at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, to kickoff the Fall 2009 Allan K. Smith Reading Series. This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase in the College bookstore and a signing and reception will follow.
When: Thursday, October 8 2009 ~ 4:30 p.m.
Where: Reese Room, Smith House on the campus on Trinity College
300 Summit Street, Hartford, Conn. 06106
Background: Emmanuel Dongala was born in Congo (Brazzaville) and earned degrees in Chemistry from Oberlin College and Rutgers University. He holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from France.
Dongala, who writes in French, has won numerous literary prizes in the U.S. and France, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Grand Prix de Littérature de l’Afrique Noire, the Prix de la Fondation de France, and the Prix Radio France Internationale. Regarded as one of the most engaging African novelists, Dongala is the author of four critically acclaimed novels, a collection of short stories and a play – translated in English and more than a dozen languages.
In 1998, a bitter civil war in the Congo forced Dongala, who was a professor of Chemistry and dean, to flee his country with help from long-term friend, the writer Philip Roth. Dongala holds the Richard B. Fisher Chair in Natural Sciences at Bard College at Simon’s Rock where he also leads a seminar in Francophone African literature. His latest novel, Johnny Mad Dog, was recently made into a film.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Tracy Quigley at 860-297-2568, or by email at [email protected].
