What is Proprioceptive Writing?

Proprioceptive Writing® is a meditative form of writing that allows you to know yourself more fully by exploring on paper the territory of your mind, memory, and emotions. This form of writing helps synthesize emotion and imagination, generating authentic insight and joy. Proprioceptive Writing® is not formal writing, nor is it automatic or stream-of-consciousness writing. A regular, disciplined practice in a quiet environment, this unique method frees the writer within. It will help to:

• Focus awareness and build self-trust
• Write and speak with strength and clarity
• Awaken the senses and emotions
• Bring increased energy and power to the creative process
• Focus and deepen the thought process

Instructor Tzivia Gover is an author, educator and certified Proprioceptive Writing Teacher.

Dear Friends of Bart's Bards,
Congratulations!
Our open microphone Greenfield "experiment" has flourished and now enters its second year.
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to our success:
--to the media for generously spreading the news of our existence and our monthly meetings;
--to Al and Susan who have made Bart's available to us;
--to the exceptionally talented writers whom we have "featured" each month;
--to those who have read at the open microphone;
--to those who showed up to listen;
--and to those who just cheered us on from the sidelines.

To begin Y2, we have a wonderful featured reader: Mary Clare Powell.

Dr. Mary Clare Powell is a professor at Lesley University, formerly Director of the Creative Arts in Learning Division, now adjunct professor who teaches poetry to teachers across the country. She has published several books, including This Way Daybreak Comes: Women's Values and the Future, The Widow, Arts, Education and Social Change (editor). She is also author of several books of poetry, including Things Owls Ate, Academic Scat, and In the Living Room. She lives in Greenfield, MA where she works on the Franklin County Arts and Culture Partnership, and is on the Board of Trustees of the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School in South Hadley. She writes articles on integrated arts in education, and poetry.

I hope you can join us at 7:00p.m. on September 10 (sign up to read at 6:45).

Bring friends to help ensure that Bart's Bards second year will add success to success.

Warmly,

Poets Asylum
Sundays:

September 6

Our feature this week, Scott Woods, has published work in a variety of publications and has been featured multiple times in national press, including multiple appearances on National Public Radio. He is the President of Poetry Slam Inc. and MCs the Writers' Block Poetry Night, an open mic series in Columbus , Ohio . In 2006 he became the first poet to ever complete a 24-hour solo poetry reading, a feat he bested every year since by performing for 24 hours each time, but without repeating a single poem. Check out his work at www.blackair.org.

Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words.

Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at 6:00 p.m. No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature.

Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets,

the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the
shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience.

Dennis Barone Reading

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Main Library

Library Meeting Room

A reading by West Hartford’s new Poet Laureate, Dennis Barone

Author of fourteen books, Barone most recently co-edited with West Hartford resident James Finnegan, Visiting Wallace: Poems Inspired by the Life and Work of Wallace Stevens (University of Iowa Press, 2009). In 2008 Quale Press published North Arrow, a collection of seventeen stories that traverse stylistic, emotional, and geographical landscapes. From New Jersey to the Netherlands to abstract poetic terrain, Dennis Barone places his characters in situations where they’re forced to confront the nature of memory, of change, and of finding one’s way in a society that can be hostile to those who circumvent its meager expectations.

The poet Noah Eli Gordon has written: ‘There is a muscularity with which [Barone’s] writing unfolds, an accumulative approach that manages to move each piece through a veritable cornucopia of contrasting images and characters, of sets and props, enlivened by his consistently rhythmic and often speedy prose.’ In 1998 Left Hand Books published his volume of selected poems entitled Separate Objects.

Dennis Barone is a Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Saint Joseph College.

The event is free. Books will be available for purchase

POETRY POTLUCK
at
The Sanctuary

Do you love poetry?

Would you like to be part of an ongoing poetry discussion group offering food for the mind and the heart?

If so, come and join us on the first Sunday of each month from 4.30-6.00 PM. Our next meeting is on Sunday, September 6, 2009, at the Yurt at The Sanctuary in East Haddam, Connecticut, to discuss poetry and build community.

This is not about sharing our own work but instead offers us a chance to share the work of poets we love, so you don’t have to be a poet to be part of this group. Just come and bring your love of poetry and a poem you would like to share.

Hosted by Greg Coleman, Suzy Lamson, and Edwina Trentham
