Edward Hirsch was born in Chicago in 1950 and educated both at Grinnell College and the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Ph.D. in folklore.
His first collection of poems, For the Sleepwalkers, was published in 1981 and went on to receive the Lavan Younger Poets Award from The Academy of American Poets and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award from New York University. His second collection, Wild Gratitude (1986), received the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Since then, he has published four books of poems, most recently Lay Back the Darkness (Alfred A. Knopf, 2003); On Love (1998); Earthly Measures (1994); and The Night Parade (1989).
He is also the author of the prose volumes The Demon and the Angel: Searching for the Source of Artistic Inspiration (Harcourt, 2002), Responsive Reading (1999), and the national bestseller How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry (1999), which the poet Garrett Hongo called "the product of a lifetime of passionate reflection" and "a wonderful book for laureate and layman both." Most recently, he published Poet's Choice (Harcourt, 2007), which collects two years' worth of his weekly essay-letters running in the Washington Post Book World. About his poetry, the poet Dana Goodyear wrote for the Los Angeles Times Book Review, "It takes a brave poet to follow Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Milton into the abyss . . . Hirsch's poems [are] compassionate, reverential, sometimes revealingly ruthless."
Hirsch has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations, an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, an Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and a Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writers' Award.
He has been a professor of English at Wayne State University and the University of Houston. Hirsch is currently the president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Word in the Valley and Beyond

Smith College will host a free public reading by poet
Jacqueline Osherow
at 12 noon. Friday, Nov. 7,
in the Poetry Center,Wright Hall.
Osherow’s work explores Jewish tradition and the inconsistencies and
mysteries in Biblical texts, often in difficult verse forms (sestinas,
sonnets, terza rima), with humor and an intimate tone. Some of her best
known poems address her post-Holocaust consciousness. “For my
generation,” she says, “those born in the aftermath of the war-the
horror ... defined the world to us. It is as a testament to this
predicament that I wish these poems to stand.” Author of five books
of poems, most recently “The Hoopoe’sCrown,” Osherow has received
fellowships from the Guggenheim and Ingram Merrill Foundations,
among other prizes and awards. She is Distinguished Professor
of English and Creative Writing at theUniversity of Utah.

Osherow’s appearance at Smith is sponsored by the Smith College
Poetry Center, the Program in Jewish Studies and the Office of the
Jewish Chaplain.

Leverett resident Janine Roberts will read from The Body Alters, forthcoming from Slate Roof Press in December. Poet Carol Edelstein writes: "Janine's lyrical poems travel the world, from the small, personal terrain of the human body to the large stage of our collective body, Earth." In addition to having poetry in A Voyage Out: Penn Women's Literary Magazine, Janine is a Fulbright scholar and author of three books on family therapy.

Janet MacFadyen and Stephen Schmidt--both of Shutesbury, MA--present a multimedia fusion of poems and nature photography entitled "Under the Influence of Water." Janet is the author of the chapbook In Defense of Stones, with a full-length work forthcoming from Killick Press. She held a Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship in Provincetown; her publications include poems in the Atlantic Monthly and Poetry. Steve's water reflections have won awards from Sierra Club and Earth magazines, and have been exhibited in the Merrill Lynch Corporate Gallery, the Arthur Griffin Center for Photographic Art, and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.

Why We Fall in Love with a Poet:
A Reading with Nikky Finney and Nancy K. Pearson

Perugia Press, Jones Library, and Everywoman’s Center present
a poetry reading with Nikky Finney, who fell in love with Nancy Pearson’s
poetry while judging manuscripts for the Perugia Press Prize last year.
Finney will read her own work, introduce Nancy, whose book Two Minutes
of Light went on to win the 2008 Perugia Press Prize.
Then Pearson will read from her award-winning book.

What moves us about the writing of certain poets? Is it when they name a truth or describe our lives or help us look at familiar situations in new ways? Is it their facility with language? Finney and Pearson will discuss these questions.

Nancy K. Pearson, originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, recently completed two seven-month poetry fellowships at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. In Two Minutes of Light, Pearson writes about a descent into the madness of addiction, suicide attempts, and self-mutilation, and the foil to these destructive ways is art itself — her gift for finding small beauty in unlikely places and transforming it into poetry.
Kim Addonizio says, “This is a book fiercely in love with the world, which unflinchingly examines what can keep someone from inhabiting that world, whole.” Pearson’s genius in Two Minutes of Light is her curiously ironic voice, the immediacy of her images, and her fearless attitude.

Born to a civil rights attorney and a teacher in the small fishing and farming community of Conway, South Carolina, Nikky Finney has been writing for as long as she has memory. Her poems are powerful and warm, like her southern roots, and provide glimpses into the human adventures of birth, death, family, violence, sexuality, and relationship, exploring the soul of human community. She highlights the constants we share and appeals for more compassion, reaching from the personal into the collective with equal measures of love and rage. Her book of poetry, Rice, was awarded the PEN American Book Award. She is the 2007-2009 Graze Hazard Conkling Writer-in-Residence at Smith College.

Everywoman’s Center (EWC) is a multicultural campus-based women’s center established in 1972. Perugia Press is an independent, not-for-profit literary press publishing one collection of poetry each year.

An informal Greenfield community group has announced the first of a series of open microphone sessions for writers on Thursday, October 2, 7:00 P.M., at Bart’s Café of Greenfield, 286 Main St. Subsequent open microphone meetings will occur on the first Thursday of each month.

Sessions will consist of a sign up for participants at 6:45 P.M., a 7:00 presentation by a previously selected “Featured Reader” and five minute reading slots for participants.

Dr. Larry Fader, one of the group’s organizers, described the series as “An opportunity to promote writing for people of varying degrees of accomplishment. Baron Wormser is the author of seven books of poetry and a poetry chapbook, his latest is a collection of new and selected poems entitled Scattered Chapters. He is the co-author of two books about teaching poetry and the author of a memoir and a collection of short stories. He teaches in the Stonecoast MFA program and directs the Frost Place Conference on Poetry and Teaching in Franconia, New Hampshire. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The Mohawk Arts and Education Council is dedicated to the cultivation and maintenance of a fine arts culture at Mohawk Regional High School and in the surrounding towns, where these six outstanding young poets who will read with Baron and Jim are from. Given that self-expression and an awareness of multiple narratives through the arts is closely related to quality of life, MAEC aims to provide opportunities for students to be both consumers and creators of the arts in various mediums. This is a partial fundraiser for the council.

Growing Younger Toward Death Every Day: Poetry To Inspire Our Lives"
is a new group that will focus on recorded poet David Whyte reciting and discussing his own and others' poetry, and inspiring us to live a fully present, authentic, and engaged life.This group will meet every two weeks from November to May, beginning Monday Nov.17, at a participant's home in Greenfield. We will listen to parts of Whyte's CDs, then discuss his message and how it applies to our lives. His line "Growing younger toward death every day" appears in his best-known poem, 'The Faces at Braga', about his life-changing experience in an old Buddhist Temple high in the Himalayas. Participants can also bring and share poems, prose, songs, or other material created by themselves or others, that moves and inspires them deeply.
There will also be opportunities to respond to Whyte's poetry and commentary through creative writing.

David Whyte is a British/Irish poet, author, and public speaker who has lived in the Seattle area for over 25 years. He travels the country and world reading his and others' poetry, and galvanizing listeners to explore their own poetic sensibilities and insights. He has published 5 books of poetry, and recorded 12 CDs of various readings and talks he's given. He has a unique, engaging, even captivating style of speaking and story-telling that brings the poetry alive and makes it accessible. His work can be seen on his website at www.manyrivers.com. Some of his CDs that we will use are: "The Poetry of Self-Compassion"; "A Change for the Better: Poetry and the Re-imagination of Mid-life"; "Faithful To All Things: Buddhism and the Western Poetic Imagination"; and "Thresholds: Navigating the Difficult Transitions of Life". Some of his recent poetry books include "Everything Is Waiting For You" and "The House of Belonging".And just to add a little more spice to this poetic soup, we'll sometimes read and discuss the poems and rich commentary in the excellent series of recent books edited by Roger Housden, such as Ten Poems To Set You Free, Ten Poems To Open Your Heart, and Ten Poems To Change Your Life. John Berkowitz, 35-year resident of Putney, VT and recently moved to Shelburne, MA, is a lover of poetry and life who has been deeply moved and influenced by Whyte's work. He wants to share with others Whyte's wisdom, humor, and exploration through poetry of the meaning of our life's journey.
There is no cost for the group other than the option to buy some of Whyte's CDs. The dates and location of future meetings can be determined by those participants at the first group and others interested in attending.

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic
In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers
of all styles and ages.
1st Tuesday of each month at
the Deb Koffman Gallery
137 Front Street,
Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.”
is hosted by John Meeks and there is usually
a $7 suggested donation for heat and electricity.
There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them.
The sign up technically is at 6:30 however the way it works is a
lottery system. If you go to check it out once, then you can put
your name on the contact email list. The following month you
get an email reminding you of the upcoming event.
If it’s your first time performing at In Words, Out Words,
you are guaranteed a spot on the roster as long as you reply
to the reminder email. If you’ve performed there before then
you are put into the lottery system and randomly names are selected.
Sometimes there are still slots open at the door.
The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on
for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

Poet Chase Twichell, selected as first Hugh Ogden Poet,
to give reading Nov. 3 at Trinity College

Poet Chase Twichell will give a public reading at Trinity College, where she will be honored as the first recipient of the Ogden Poetry Prize, awarded in memory of beloved Trinity Professor Hugh Ogden, who died in 2006. A book signing and dessert reception will follow the reading.

A 1973 Trinity graduate, Chase Twichell is the author of six books of poems and a book of translations and co-author of the best-selling text book The Practice of Poetry: Writing Exercises From Poets Who Teach. She taught for ten years at Princeton University before starting Ausable Press, an independent literary press. She lives with her husband, the novelist Russell Banks, in the Adirondacks.

Before Hugh Ogden died in December 2006 his family and colleagues had been working on a surprise for his 70th birthday: a celebration and poetry prize in his name. Though he sadly never knew about their efforts, a poetry reading and celebration of Ogden’s life was held at Trinity in June 2007, and it was announced that in his honor, the Ogden Poetry Prize would be established to annually recognize a Trinity alumnus/a who demonstrates excellence in the art and beauty of language. The prize is awarded to a published poet who shows commitment to the environment and/or social justice, causes that were important to Ogden. A member of the English department since 1967, Ogden was the author of seven books and approximately 500 poems.
While a professor at Trinity, he co-founded the Creative Writing Program. "At nearly every alumni gathering across the country, former students have asked me about [Ogden]," said James F. Jones, Jr., President and Trinity College Professor in the Humanities. "I was honored to serve on the same faculty with him."

with Judith Doyle, Raouf Mama, and Paul Pines - 8:00 p.m.
Judith Doyle, executive director and publisher of Curbstone Press, will speak about Sandy Taylor's (1931-2007) dedication and contribution to Curbstone Press, as well as his commitment to poetry, peace, and human rights. The featured writers published by Curbstone Press will be Raouf Mama and Paul Pines. Mama, a native of Benin in West Africa, is a noted storyteller and author of four books of stories, including Pearls of Wisdom and Why Monkeys Live in Trees & Other Stories from Benin. He earned his Ph.D. in English and education from the University of Michigan and teaches English at Eastern Connecticut State University. Pines is a poet, novelist, and jazz historian whose recent book of nonfiction is My Brother's Madness. He has authored six books of poetry, including Taxidancing, and teaches American literature and creative writing at Adirondack Community College in New York. He also hosts the annual Lake George Jazz Weekend. Curbstone Press will have books for sale after the reading.

Featured musician: Ken Cormier - 7:00 p.m.
Ken Cormier is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and poet who has recorded two CDs with Elis Eil Records. He is also the author of Balance Act, a collection of poems and short stories from Insomniac Press. Cormier is the editor of The Lumberyard Journal (http://www.thelumberyardjournal.com/), a radio magazine of poetry, prose and music, which is broadcast at WHUS, University of Connecticut.

She has authored two collections of poetry, Deenewood, A Sequence and Pomegranate Wine, both by Turning Point Books. Her honors include the Frances Shaw Fellowship at Ragdale, a fellowship at MacDowell, and Academy of American Poets Prize. One critic says of Pomegranate Wine that it is "instilled with the glory of Paradise, albeit lost, and has at its heart a still small voice of hope prevailing on the far side of endurance..." December 4 enjoy the holidays with a creative father/son duo-- the dad is a prize-winning poet and the son is a talented singer, composer, keyboardist. Poet John Surowiecki has had two books published, The Hat City after Men Stopped Wearing Hats (Word Works, 2007) and Watching Cartoons before Attending a Funeral (White Pine Press, 2003), as well as five chapbooks. He is the winner of many prizes, including the Poetry Foundationʼs Pegasus Award for his verse drama, My Nose and Me, and the Pablo Neruda Prize. Singer John E. Surowiecki has played his own songs in countless venues around eastern Connecticut. His style leans toward classic rock, with emphasis on eloquence, musicianship, and strong melody line. LEMON ANDERSEN coming to THE BUSHNELL
On Monday evening, December 1, poet Lemon Andersen will bring his jarring coming of age memoir to life at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Literature to Life series, a creation of The American Place Theatre in New York. Lemon’s portrait of a modern “manchild” on a tumultuous journey of self-discovery is performed in his unique voice, weaving drama with urban poetry. His true story of finding passion and purpose in life, against all odds, exposes the human experience behind the most influential and prevalent cultural movement of our time, commonly referred to as hip-hop.

Lemon Andersen is a critically acclaimed poet best known for his Tony Award winning work in Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and HBO. Lemon’s memoir (working titles The Beautiful Struggle or County of Kings) is a work in progress and has not yet been published.
