Lay-led Spiritual Service at the
Unitarian Society of Northampton & Florence
Truth to Power: Poetry of Action
Times are hard. There are lots of reasons to throw in the towel. When politics is a mess, we can do just that or we can choose to find inspiration to keep us fighting the good fight. These are times we can turn to poetry to help re-energize us. Come to this spiritual service with a poetry focus, featuring the poetry of famous poets and some local not-so-famous poets, as well as some great music. All welcome!
Sunday, September 2, 2007 10AM
Unitarian Society of Northampton & Florence,
220 Main Street,
Northampton

New! Free Poetry Workshop!
Poetry of the Senses: Writing the Imperfect Poem
Wednesdays, September 5 – October 24, 7-9 p.m.
at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, 525 South Pleasant Street, Amherst

“... irregular perfection, the imperfect perfection of the plant and of the insect ...” This aphorism by Octavio Paz will inspire our eight weeks of writing, observing, and exploring together. Play with language, strengthen your writing, and create new work through a combination of in-the-moment exercises, selected reading, and compassionate critique. Encounters with various species of poems and ideas will inspire your creativity as we explore diversity in writing and in nature. This workshop is open and suitable for experienced poets, new writers, and anyone with a sense of adventure.

There is no charge but pre-registration is required. Please call 413-695-8251 (evenings) or e-mail with questions and to register.

Kathryn (Kat) Good-Schiff is a poet, prose writer, and student in the M.F.A. in Writing program of Goddard College. She has taught poetry workshops to children and teenagers, and is excited to branch out into teaching adults. Her writing has appeared in various journals and magazines, including Kalliope and Ithaca College Quarterly.

Women's Science Fiction/Fantasy Writing Group
Have you been writing science fiction or fantasy, and want a supportive
environment to get feedback on your writing? Do you want encouragement
and support to write? Have you thought about writing scifi or fantasy,
but haven't yet tried it?
We want to form a peer group of women in the Pioneer Valley who are
interested in delving into science fiction and/or fantasy writing. We
would meet regularly to write and share our writing and ideas.

unexpected and familiar places, while supporting them in
affirming space among their peers.

Please join us this week for a feature by Karen Ladson.
Native New Yorker Karen Ladson got her first taste of slam at the 1999 Nuyorican Semifinals. Watching a good friend compete, she thought, "I could never do that." A move to the Left Coast and one mundane dotcom job changed all that. On January 14, 2001, Karen Ladson set a goal: "to write a poem." One month later, she won her first slam. Three months later, she became a proud member of Team Berkeley 2001.

THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Beginning August 17th, poet and journalist Victor D. Infante will host The Eclectic Word, an Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets, satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd, the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month, as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the shows live, or you can download it later for your listening convenience. For our inaugural installment Friday, I'll be joined by Poetry Slam Inc. President Scott Woods, poet Susan B.A. Somers-Willett, author of the book Roam and the forthcoming book of criticism, The Cultural Politics of Slam Poetry: Race and the Rise of Popular Verse in America, and Marc Smith, founder of the poetry slam for "The Past, Present and Future of Slam."

Future shows:
On Friday, Sept. 7th, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, we're going to change gears completely, with guests Allyson Beatrice, author of Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby? and Jillian Venters, author of the online column Gothic Charm School, for an installment we're calling "Manners and the Undead."

And on Friday, Sept. 21st, at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, we'll be joined by David A. Griffith, author of A Good War is Hard to Find, and Wayne Koestenbaum, author of Hotel Theory, for "A Spotlight on Soft Skull Press."
So give it a listen! It's going to be a blast!

CAMBRIDGE READINGS

Central Square’s world-famous Cantab Lounge
presents performances from local and national poets, as well as a
chance to present your own work in the open mic or poetry slam.

Wednesday, August 29
When you think poetry in Amherst, Massachusetts, you have to think of Casey Rocheteau. Three-time member and coach of the Amherst collegiate slam team, Casey made a name for herself in Boston with the perceptive and truly original material she brings to the stage. Come catch this up-and-coming performance poet in her first Cantab feature.

Wednesday, September 5
April Ranger became an almost instant favorite when she began reading regularly on the Cantab open mic: since day one, her vivid, original imagery has been eliciting longing sighs from our audience, making her the local master of the Oh-I-Wish-I-Had-Written-That poem. After April's feature, Brian S. Ellis will defend his Champion of Champions title against the season challenger in an intense best-of-seven head-to-head slam.

Wednesday, September 12
Longtime poet Tony Brown has probably been tired of slamming since before you heard of the poetry slam, and bassist Steven Cafaro isn’t even as old as the movement itself. Together, this unlikely pair forms Duende, a poetry/music duo that breathes new life into the old Beat sound.

Legendary Boston Poet Jack Powers Celebrates 70th.
On Sept 15, 2007 at 5P.M
at the International Community Church in Allston (30 Gordon St.)
celebrated poet Jack Powers will celebrate his 70th birthday
with a potluck dinner and reading.
Jack Powers is the founder of Boston’s legendary “Stone Soup Poets.” Founded in 1971 at the Charles Meeting House on Beacon Hill in Boston, Powers has lead this venue of readings, activism and publishing for well over thirty years. Powers was also influential in establishing the Beacon Hill Free School in the 1970’s, which encouraged people to teach and participate in educational courses for no charge.
Stone Soup Poets is almost as well known for its publishing history. Powers has published over 80 titles , including Powers’ personal favorite “Jack of Hearts,” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Powers has also published such poets under the Stone Soup imprint as the award-winning Franny Lindsay, and the late Black Mountain School poet John Wieners.
Powers has jumpstarted the careers of many well-known poets including the small press doyenne Lyn Lifshin. Folks like Beat bad boy Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Bly have passed through Stone Soup’s poetic portal.
Stone Soup Poets has been housed for the last several years at the Out of the Blue Art Gallery in Cambridge, Mass. It meets every Monday at 8PM, and carries on the proud tradition with the help of poet Chad Parenteau.
The well-known Boston street artist and activist Sidewalk Sam, as well as Doug Holder of the Ibbetson Street Press, Rev. Lorraine Cleaves Anderson of the International Community Church, and Margaret Nairn president of Collaborative Artworks Inc, are organizing the celebration.
The reading and potluck dinner will have music provided by Boston -area poet and singer/songwriter Jennifer Matthews, as well as Powers’ sons.
All friends and acquaintances, and anyone who has been touched by Jack in his long literary outreach are invited to come. Bring a poem, a dish for the potluck, and a friend!
