Western New England College
To Host Poetry Reading January 28

Western New England College and Writers Spring Forth will host a reading featuring poets Lynne Thompson of Los Angeles, Gene Zeiger of Shelburne Falls, and Laura Chagnon of West Springfield on Monday, January 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the St. Germain Campus Center Bear’s Den. The event is free and open to the public.

Lynne Thompson is the 2007 winner of the Perugia Press First Book Prize for Beg No Pardon. A Pushcart Prize nominee, she authored the chapbooks We Arrive By Accumulation and Through a Window and her work has been widely anthologized, most recently in Voices from Leimert Park and Blue Arc West, An Anthology of California Poets. Thompson is an attorney and holds the position of Director of Employee & Labor Relations at UCLA.

Gene Zeiger’s memoir, How I Find Her: A Mother’s Dying and a Daughter’s Life, was released in May 2001 by Sherman Asher Publishing of Santa Fe. After being highly praised in “O,” Oprah’s magazine, Hadassah Magazine, and by many other reviewers, it is now in its second printing. It was also published in Germany by Kindler-Verlag in the spring of 2003. Her second memoir, “Atta Girl” was published in 2005. Zeiger, a frequent commentator for NPR, including All Things Considered, is also the winner of a Massachusetts Cultural Council award for poetry. She has published three collections of poems, Sudden Dancing, (A.W.A. Press) and Leaving Egypt, Radio Waves, (White Pine Press). She is a creative writing workshop leader in Shelburne, and the poetry editor for Sanctuary, Massachusetts’ Audubon's magazine. A regular contributor to The Sun, her poems, stories and personal essays have also appeared in dozens of magazines including The New York Times Book Review, The Georgia Review, The Massachusetts Review, and Tikkun.

Laura Chagnon has been writing poetry since 1993. Her works explore the reality of living with loss and pain, of beauty and hope, and her love of nature. After an accident in 1989, at age 26, Laura woke from a five-week coma quadriplegic and legally blind. She spent the next three years in rehabilitation hospitals. Laura has never put one word of poetry on paper with her own hand nor has she seen her words in print. She dictates her poems to her personal care assistants. Her poems have appeared in local and national publications. In 1996, the Community United Way of Pioneer Valley chose her poems to be used in the agency’s televised public service announcements. Laura resides with her family in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

This reading is the first of five reading events at the Bear’s Den sponsored by Western New England College and Writers Spring Forth, a women’s writing group that meets weekly in Springfield. Additional sponsorship is provided by Blue Moon Coffee Roasters of Springfield. The purpose of the reading series is to bring forth local and outside writer’s voices to the greater Springfield audiences. The readings will feature many writers from Springfield, Western Massachusetts, New York, Boston, and other cities. Raffles of the authors’ books and items will take place following the reading. There will be an opportunity to buy copies of the authors’ books as well.

Eddie Bartók-Baratta
Flute player and poet Eddie Bartók-Baratta will join dancer
Milena Dabova for another collaborative event
Friends Meetinghouse,
43 Center Street,
Northampton,
Sunday, December 30th, 2007, at 7 p.m.
Eddie Bartók-Baratta’s most recent poems are published in African American Review, Ploughshares, and Boston Review, adding to his more than 200 previously published poems. He has a CD out now, Old New York City Where I Lay My Head, and a book of poems forthcoming in 2008, Book for John.
Eddie recites his poems from memory. “His work,” says Katy Ryan, associate professor, West Virginia University, “brings me lyrically, without pretense, back to a world of hope and promise.”

With original movement and dance, Milena Dabova adds subtlety, beauty, mystery and power. Not simply adding to Eddie’s flute compositions, Milena creates a larger discourse and dialogue, expanding our understanding of movement, musical phrasing, language, and play.
The event promises to be playful, funny and poignant.

Forbes Library
Equinox Poetry Reading
You are invited to an evening of poetry
on Wednesday, January 2, 2007
at 7:00 p.m.

Poets from the magazine The Equinox
Published annually, the Equinox offers an eclectic medley of genres, themes, and of voices, mostly local to western Massachusetts, but nicely accented by voices from farther afield as well. Previously published and unpublished writers and poets alike meet and mingle here. And we publish short fiction and non-fiction as well as poetry in the interests of keeping a prosaic balance to the poetics; else wise, the excess of paddling poets might have our literary vessel turning in circles. The wordsmiths benefit as well from the tuneful and artful contributions of those who craft meaning from sound and sight.About the Poets:

Lea Banks, the curator of The Collected Poets Series, is Poetry Editor of The Equinox Journal and works as Editorial Assistant for The Marlboro Review. Her work is published in Diner, Slipstream, Poetry Northwest, The Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry, and recently, in The Equinox, America Poetry Journal, and the online journal, Survivor's Review. Lea's new chapbook, Lightning Always Strikes Twice published by Ginger Cat Press, is coming out in late spring 2008. She was awarded a fellowship from the American Association of University Women for her work with stroke survivors and also, from the Yellow Fox Foundation. She is an MFA candidate at New England College and lives in Shelburne Falls with Mambo the Cat, and her daughter Sarah.

Bob Hoeppner is a poet who compulsively reassures himself of the value of poetry. He's been published in The Ballard Street Poetry Journal, The Berkshire Review, The Equinox, The November Third Club, Silkworm, and Hooks, a Sacred Fools Anthology.

Tim Mayo’s poems have received two International Merit Awards from and been published by The Atlanta Review. His poetry has also appeared in Poet Lore, 5AM, The Fall Equinox and a host of other journals and e-zines. In 2000 he was a Semi-Finalist “Discovery”/The Nation Poetry Contest, and in 2006 he received a Vermont Artist & Writer’s Grant form the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson Vermont. More recently one of his poems has been chosen as a Finalist in the WinningWriters.com 2007 War Poetry Contest. He holds an ALB, Cum Laude, in French Language & Culture from Harvard University and an MFA from The Bennington Writing Seminars. He lives in Brattleboro, Vermont where he continues to wish he was somewhere else when winter comes.

Laura Rodley recently had a poem nominated for a Pushcart Prize by Ibbetson’s Street Press, had work published in the book Kiss Me Goodnight, been featured poet for Aurorean, been in the anthologies Crossing Paths, 911 Peace Project, Anthology of New England Writers and journals such as Massachusetts Review, Sanctuary, The National Audubon Magazine, Quick Fiction, Kerf, Tiger’s Eye, and (England) Fire. She has taught Creative Writing in public schools on Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants. Her poetry has been read on WHMP, KVMR, 89.5 FM radio in Nevada City, California, and NPR affiliated station, WAMC, Albany NY. A mother of three children, She works as a freelance writer and photographer.

Cyn J Horton has lived. As a longtime poet and Northampton resident, she cites Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro as her early influences (respectively placing fourth and fifth after black & white television, cowboys and spies!) Trained as a child in the graphic arts, she began journaling on the advice of her oil painting instructor. Poetry became a natural outlet (…hmmm, painting with brushes, painting with words, painting with brushes, painting with words.) Born in Natick, MA, Cyn attended Beloit College and received a degree in Theatre Arts. In her quest for notoriety, she moved to NYC and broke into the union at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as the first woman ''art handler". After an eight year stint in San Francisco, she returned to New England craving the change of seasons. At this reading she will reveal why she no longer plays softball.

Lori Desrosiers is a poet and native New Yorker who now makes Westfield, MA her home. She hosts Community Voices, a poetry open mic, on Monday nights at Jestors in Westfield, teaches English Composition at Westfield State College, and is studying for her MFA in Poetry at New England College. Lori has published in numerous magazines and is the publisher of Poetry News, an online events magazine for poets.

Maureen Moore of Ginger Cat Press publishes the Equinox, a literary journal featuring the stories, poems, essays and art of emerging and established creatives of Western Mass (and beyond). The Ginger Cat also publishes chap books, presentation volumes, and print-on-demand publications. She spends the rest of her waking hours writing and reading, mostly history.

This reading is part of our fifth annual Poetry Reading Series that takes place on the first Wednesday of the month from October to June. Free and open to all.

Location: Coolidge Museum

This is the third reading in our monthly poetry reading series, now in its 5th year. Once again, the series features a wonderful array of local poets. This year’s series includes readings by MCC artist grant recipients, poets from the magazine The Equinox, Smith College’s Writer in Residence - Nikky Finney, poetry of Northampton’s poet laureate Jack Gilbert, middle school poets, and Smith College student poets. For complete program details, please visit our website http://www.forbeslibrary.org/ or pick up a program brochure at the library.
