What better way to start the new year than with poetry! Mark your calendars now for a terrific reading by bilingual poet, María Luisa Arroyo. Maria will be inviting friends to read with her. María's book, Gathering Words: Recogiendo Palabras, was recently reviewed by Cathleen Robinson for El Sol Latino, "María Luisa Arroyo, a transplanted Puerto Rican who grew up in the North End of Springfield, is an artist blessed with the talent of finding exactly the right words and the right cadence to show what she sees and what she feels. She shares that vision with us in her word pictures and word music. Her readers and her listeners can draw their own conclusions after experiencing the truths her poetic vision imparts." |
A Springfield North End native educated at Colby (B.A.), Tufts (M.A.) and Harvard (A.B.D.) in German Language and Literature, María Luisa Arroyo writes and publishes poetry as she raises her son, facilitates writing workshops, teaches adult learners the power of writing and of owning math concepts as a G.E.D. instructor, and supports community ventures such as Teatro V!da, the first Latin@ theater and performing arts in Springfield. A 2004 Massachusetts Cultural Council grant winner in poetry, María Luisa Arroyo is delighted to return to the Forbes Library in order to share poems from her published collection of poetry, Gathering Words: Recogiendo Palabras (The Bilingual Press, Tempe, AZ: June 2008) and from her chapbook, "Touching and Naming the Roots of this Tree" (September 2007).
This reading is part of the Seventh Annual Forbes Poetry Series. The series takes place on the first Wednesday of the month from October to May at the Forbes Library. Readings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the Friends of the Forbes Library.

SUSAN HOWARD CASE MEMORIAL POETRY CORNER
The Forbes Library in Northampton, MA has created a new collection of the works of local poets named the Susan Howard Case Poetry Corner. This collection has been named in memory of a local poet who contributed to the library's rich poetry community through her volunteer service. The non-circulating collection consists of poetry books and chapbooks by Pioneer Valley poets, and locally published literary journals. "The idea for this collection developed in response to the abundance of many gifted poets in our area," said D.M. Gordon, Forbes Library Writer-in-Residence who created the idea for this new collection.
The collection will be housed in the Arts & Music magazine lounge on the library's second floor. The items in the collection are to be read in the library and comfortable seating is available nearby. The library hopes to grow the collection through donations. Anyone interested in donating to the collection should contact Lisa Downing, Assistant Director, at 413-587-1017 or .

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic
In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers of all styles and ages.
1st Tuesday of each month at the Deb Koffman Gallery 137 Front Street, Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.” is hosted by John Meeks and there is usually a $7 suggested donation for heat and electricity. There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them. The sign up technically is at 6:30 however the way it works is a lottery system. If you go to check it out once, then you can put your name on the contact email list. The following month you get an email reminding you of the upcoming event. If it’s your first time performing at In Words, Out Words, you are guaranteed a spot on the roster as long as you reply to the reminder email. If you’ve performed there before then you are put into the lottery system and randomly names are selected. Sometimes there are still slots open at the door.
The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

Lee Writers Group
(every 2nd Tuesday of the month) at the Lee Library Conference Room.
Develop and hone writing skills through constructively critiquing others as well as receiving helpful hints and suggestions. This forum will host a variety of short stories, poetic compilations, insightful and original essays, and other varieties of writing similarly tangible in length. The purpose of this group is to embody character and narrator through obsessive directive fervor with written and spoken words. The group will meet every second Tuesday sharing original works via recitation and distribution and should be prepared to accept constructive feedback and be able to, in return, deliver such feedback in a respectable and deliberate manner.

The d'Alzon Arts Series: Poetry Reading
takes place at Assumption College (500 Salisbury Street, Worcester) in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library on the third Friday of each month during the academic year. The format is an open mic for the first half-hour or so, a short break with refreshments and then 2 featured poets.. The reading starts at 7:00 p.m. and typically runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Poet and journalist Victor D. Infante hosts The Eclectic Word, an Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets, satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd, the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

New Poetry/Reading Series to begin at Billings Forge
The Studio @ Billings Forge is pleased to introduce to its programming a new poetry/reading series entitled,WordForge. WordForge is a series of readings featuring local poets along with an open mike component.
All events will be scheduled for Monday nights, with a 7 p.m. start time.
WordForge is curated and organized by local poet, Jim Finnegan. Harvest Reading, is the first reading in the series, scheduled for Monday, November 16th, and participants are asked to bring a canned good or small donation that will be contributed to a local food bank. Many of the readings will have a featured theme in addition to featured invited poets.

On December 17, come celebrate “Family Night” during the holidays with a special mother-daughter duo. Maggie Green, poet, nurse, and singer, reads with her daughter, Nora Pasco. Maggie Green is a long-time Hartford-area poet, veteran of local poetry venues with publishing credits including Rattle magazine. Nora Pasco, a student at Tunxis Community College, is a gifted young poet of high promise whose work has recently been published in Freshwater.
An open mike and light refreshments follow the featured poet at each event.

Award winning flutist Barbara Hopkins’ CD releases include Telemann Methodical Sonatas, Vol. 1 and the best-selling Short Concert Pieces for Flute and Piano, now in its second printing. She was awarded a fellowship to Tanglewood Music Center, where she had the honor of playing principal flute under Leonard Bernstein. She has been a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 1993, and teaches flute at the University of Connecticut. She also founded The Rosewood Chamber Ensemble with guitarist Judy Handler and plays concerts of nineteenth century American music. Initially starting as the quarterly literary magazine, key satch(el), in 1997, Quale Press has been publishing chapbooks and collections of prose poetry since 2004. A full catalog of their titles and subscription information are available at: www.quale.com. Founder and editor Gian Lombardo will speak briefly about the press’s history and mission.
Brian Clements is the author of several collections of poetry, including Disappointed Psalms, Essays Against Ruin, and his Quale Press title, And How to End It. Clements is also editor of the independent, non-profit press Firewheel Editions and of Firewheel’s flagship publication, Sentence: A Journal of Prose Poetics. He is professor of Writing, Linguistics, and Creative Process at Western Connecticut State University and coordinator of WestConn's MFA in Professional Writing.
Elizabeth Bryant's forthcoming book from Quale Press is nevertheless enjoyment. She is the author of the chapbook Fluorescence Buzz (Dusie/Hex Presse, 2009), as well as the forthcoming chapbook from the same publisher, No Subject. Also forthcoming is her second, full-length book, Reality Visits the Land of Illusions. She lives and writes in Red Hook, NY, where she co-curates the Bard Roving Reading Series. Dennis Barone’s work has appeared in the Chicago Review, The Prose Poem: An International Journal, and Quarter After Eight, among others. Left Hand Books published an edition of his selected poems, Separate Objects, in 1998. He is a professor of English and director of the American Studies Program at Saint Joseph College in West Hartford. Quale Press has published several works of his: Precise Machine, Walking Backwards, The Disguise of Events, and the most recent, North Arrow.

Virtually unknown to New England before the 2008 NorthBEAST tournament, Philadelphia slammer Leslie McIntosh wowed the local audience with the craft and subtlety of his slam work. After a year of negotiations, we’ve convinced him to take a break from his own poetry studies to bring something new for us to hear. Last open poetry slam of 2010.

From St. Paul: 2009 National Poetry Slam Champion Sierra DeMulder! Sierra has been wowing crowds with her dramatic persona work and youthful poise since CUPSI 2005. Dividing her time between New York’s Intangibles Spoken Word Collective and the St. Paul-Soapboxing Slam, she’ll make just a few poetic stops in New England to bring us her championship voice. Writing Wrongs SlamMaster Will Evans has represented his Columbus venue four times at the National Poetry Slam and twice at the Individual World Poetry Slam, including a finals finish just this past October in Berkeley, California. A phenomenal writer and riveting performer, Will’s now represented on Penmanship Books out of NYC. Open poetry slam in the 8x8 series.
