POE IN WESTFIELD FRIDAY
Westfield on Weekends inc. continues its celebration of Harvest Days in the District,
Westfield’s new downtown, with Poe, Times Two, a dramatic retelling of two classics by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. starring New York actor Gregory Oliver Bodine
this Friday, October 5 at 7 PM and Saturday, October 6 at 3 PM and 7 PM
at the Westfield Woman’s Club, 28 Court Street.
Returning to the Westfield stage after an acclaimed performance in his one-man version of A Christmas Carol during last year’s Westfield Dickens Days, Bodine will bring Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado and The Black Cat to life this coming weekend in a production that he has adapted from two of Poe’s large catalog of horror stories.
"The Cask of Amontillado"’ was first published in 1846 when Poe was already nationally known as the author of the poem ‘‘The Raven’’. The story is narrated by a Venetian nobleman Senior Montresor who holds a lethal grudge against his unsuspecting friend named Fortunato whose appreciation for a treasured wine called Amontillado leads him to an untimely end.
First published on the front page of the Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post in August, 1843, "The Black Cat" is one of Poe's famous murder tales. The impassioned narrator speaks to us on the eve of a hated man’s execution for the crime of killing his wife. It is Poe’s masterful study of the criminal mind and a descent into darkness.
Both The Cask of Amontillado and the Black Cat continue to frighten and to engage readers with their tales of revenge and murder.
“What better harvest fare than a little Poe and who better to perform it than the actor, who brought audiences to their feet as Ebenezer and his Ghosts last December, “ said Bob Plasse, President of Westfield on Weekends. “Bodine and Poe make for some seasonally scary fun that we are proud to present.”
“Poe, Times Two is filled with good old-fashioned thrills, chills and all things spooky., Plasse continued “It is a must-see for Poe enthusiasts and fans of mystery and horror, aged twelve and older.”
Bodine’s impressive resume includes work as a director/actor at Princeton Repertory, Lincoln Center Director’s lab, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Theater, the American Globe Theater and at Manhattan Theatre Source. On television he has been seen on Guiding Light, As the World Turns and Saturday Night Live.

Louise Glück at Amherst College
November 1 Thursday 6:00 pm Johnson Chapel
Pulitzer Prize winner and United States Poet Laureate (2003-4) Louise Glück is the author of numerous books of poetry. Her tenth, Averno, was nominated for a National Book Award, and according to The New York Times, demonstrates that “she is writing at the peak of her powers.” The New Yorker wrote: “The poems brilliantly display a poet’s insight, a mother’s warmth, and a mortal’s empathy. There is wry humor, too, and, amid much that is dark, there are fragments of hope.” Glück’s reading will be preceded by a talk by scholar and critic Willard Spiegelman, editor-in-chief of The Southwest Review, at 4:00 pm in the Cole Assembly Room. Co-sponsored by the Department of English.

Online Writing Group for Women
Swirl and Swing is a free, private, online women’s writing group. We are a small group looking to recruit a few new members. We offer a rich variety of writing activities, including weekly and monthly assignments. In addition, we have a featured writer section each month that allows members an opportunity to work and seek feedback on additional writing projects.
Our members work in a variety of forms, including poetry, fiction, children’s literature, and memoir. We have members in the Western Massachusetts and New England area, but our members are spread throughout the U.S. Our mission is to foster a small but vibrant community of writers; to share our work, joys and frustrations; to encourage and inspire each other; and to serve as sounding boards and sources of constructive criticism. We welcome writers of every stripe and flavor.
If you’re interested in applying, please send a brief bio and a sample of three poems or pieces of short fiction that are representative of your work to the attention of Ingrid at .

World-Famous Performance Poets Perform at Boston’s Paradise Lounge
On Saturday, September 29, the Boston Poetry Slam will present a special one-night engagement of Solomon Sparrow’s Electric Whale Revival. This group of four of the world’s best-known slam poets will appear at the Paradise Lounge in Boston as part of their coast-to-coast one-month tour.
Buddy Wakefield, Dan Leamen, Derrick Brown, and Mike McGee have each toured the country individually, winning myriad poetry slam titles and innumerable hearts along the way, but this tour is the only chance to see these four very different poetic voices on the stage together.
In addition, this one-time event will showcase two poet/folk musicians: Blair from Detroit and local Shira Erlichman. These two prominent poets will only appear with the Revival for this one Boston show.
Collectively, the poets in this show represent every National and World Poetry Slam since 2003, save one. Any one of these artists would be enough to pack a poetry house to the gills; all six of them are likely to burn the place down.
Doors for this show open at 6:00. Blair will perform at 7:00, followed by shira e. and the tiny tornadoes. The Revival takes the stage at 8:30 sharp. The show is 18+.
Tickets may be purchased at the Paradise box office or online at http://thedise.tickets.musictoday.com/. Ticket cost is $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

It was only a year ago that Danny Sherrard was being hailed as a Seattle phenomenon, taking the local youth scene by storm and not letting up on the adults, either. As a member of the incredible 2007 Seattle Slam Team, he competed in Austin and took top honors as the 2007 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion. Danny’s raw, lyrical talent represents the rising school in slam poetry today.

Gary Mex Glazner can lay claim to some amazing poetry history: producer of the first ever National Poetry Slam in San Francisco, Gary’s since edited Ears on Fire, Poetry Slam: The Competitive Art of Performance Poetry, and Sparking Memories: The Alzheimer’s Poetry Project Anthology. Now taking over as Managing Director of the nonprofit wing of the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City, Gary brings his poetry and his work ethic east to us.
