Central Library Poetry Writing Workshops
Saturday mornings, 9:30 - 11:30 June 27, July 18, August 8, August 22

Once again, the Central Library will be hosting Saturday morning poetry writing workshops, which will be facilitated by María Luisa Arroyo. Sessions will include time for new writing as well as for feedback on existing pieces. If you want feedback, bring 10 copies of your piece.

Both newcomers and regulars ages 12+ are welcome to join any or all dates.

A native of Springfield's North End educated at Colby (B.A.), Tufts (M.A.)
and Harvard (A.B.D.), María Luisa Arroyo won a 2004 Massachusetts Cultural Council
grant in poetry and first place in the Spanish-language division of the Library's 2006 Poetry
Contest. In addition to being an award-winning poet, Arroyo is an educator, single parent,
and currently, a GED instructor at a local non-profit organization.
Her poems have been published in many journals including PALABRA:
A Magazine for Chicano and Latino Literary Art , CALYX , and The Women's Times .
The Bilingual Review/Press (AZ) published her first full-length volume of poems,
Gathering Words/Recogiendo Palabras, last summer (2008).

These workshops are supported by the "Write On, Springfield!" grant from the Springfield
Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council

Valley Writers School:
Now Accepting Applications for Summer Session

The Valley Writers School offers (variously) fiction, non-fiction,
and poetry workshops for writers seeking to generate new work,
refine works-in-progress, read and discuss great literature,
and join a supportive writing community.
This summer we will run two workshops: one in poetry and
one in non-fiction/memoir.
Session begins the week of July 6 and runs for six weeks.
Workshops are in the evening and held at the Writers' Mill in Florence.

Second Thursdays Open Microphone for Writers
Next month, July 9,
Greenfield's own Maria Williams-Russell will be our featured reader.
Maria has shared some of her writings at open microphone.
Her intensity and grace is obvious to all who know her work.
July 9 should be a banner night at Bart's.

Maria Williams-Russell is a writer who sometimes thinks of herself as a lost bird whose feathers don't match the feathers of the other birds where she has landed. Adopted by a Lithuanian mother and a Mayflower descendant father, she is not quite sure what it means when people ask her for directions in Spanish or marvel at her olive skin. Her poetry seems to revolve, in various ways, around this idea of displacement, of where and what is home. Maria received her MFA in poetry from Goddard College and her poems have been published in The Bellevue Literary Review, Chronogram, Sous Rature and other small journals. Her poem "The Woven River" will be stenciled on the site of the new River Culture Art Pathway in Turners Falls, MA in the summer of 2009. She writes from her home in Greenfield, MA.

In Words, Out Words in Housatonic

In Housatonic, MA there is an open mic for poets and performers
of all styles and ages.
1st Tuesday of each month at
the Deb Koffman Gallery
137 Front Street,
Housatonic, MA 01236. “In Words, Out Words.”
is hosted by John Meeks and there is usually
a $7 suggested donation for heat and electricity.
There are snacks there provided by whoever wants to bring them.
The sign up technically is at 6:30 however the way it works is a
lottery system. If you go to check it out once, then you can put
your name on the contact email list. The following month you
get an email reminding you of the upcoming event.
If it’s your first time performing at In Words, Out Words,
you are guaranteed a spot on the roster as long as you reply
to the reminder email. If you’ve performed there before then
you are put into the lottery system and randomly names are selected.
Sometimes there are still slots open at the door.
The open mic begins at 7 and the featured performer goes on
for about 20 minutes. It usually lasts until between 9 and 9:30.

and narrator through obsessive directive fervor with written and
spoken words.

via recitation and distribution and should be prepared to accept

Worcester Storytellers meets on the second Friday of each month at the Village Arts Gallery

The d'Alzon Arts Series: Poetry Reading
takes place at Assumption College (500 Salisbury Street, Worcester) in the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library on the third Friday of each month during the academic year. The format is an open mic for the first half-hour or so, a short break with refreshments and then 2 featured poets.. The reading starts at 7:00 p.m. and typically runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Readings run throughout the school year.

The The After Nine Poetry Series, former The Spot,
is a weekly poetry reading in the Ship Room at the Hotel Vernon
(1 Kelly Square, Worcester).

The reading gathers starting at 8:00 p.m. but honestly things don't usually get started until 9ish. They hold an open mic followed by a feature.

21+ and proper id is required.


Speakout! Youth Slam Saturday Night
The Speakout! Youth Poetry Slam returns from the winter hiatus and is back to meeting every Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The format is an open mic, youth slam (ages 13-19 welcome) and a feature. This week their feature will be 2008 Worcester Slam team member Trevor Byrne-Smith. Come share a poem at the open mic or come to see slammers. Join them in The Bisto in Higgins Student Center (950 Main Street, Worcester).



Poets Asylum

Join the Poets' Asylum this week for a feature by Chad Anderson. Chad is a poet, teacher, skateboarder and A/V geek from the Jersey Shore. He's been a member of 4 nationally competing poetry slam teams and has performed around the country twice. He was a member of the 2005 NYC Urbana team and the 2007 New Jersey Grand Slam Champion. He is a member of the Executive Council of Poetry Slam Inc. and the creator and host of New Jersey's own poetry slam, self deprecatingly titled, Loser Slam.

This week the Poets' Asylum will host the first of two open qualifying slam to determine who will battle it out to be the 2009 Worcester representative to the Individual World Poetry Championship. This will be a two round slam with 3 minute time limits. The usual rules apply. The top finishers tonight moves on to the iWPS Finals on
August 30th.

July 12
This week members of the 2009 Worcester Youth Slam Team will be our features. Help us send the Youth Slammers on their way as they prepare for their trip to the Brave New Voices event in Chicago, IL. Jeff Seigrist, Kate Richardson, Elyse Bianchet, Carolyn Mshooshian and Eddy Habib are expected to perform.

Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words.

Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at 6:00 p.m. No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature.



The Dirty Gerund
There's a new poetry reading in town! The Dirty Gerund Poetry Show will be held every Monday night starting at 8:30 p.m. The reading is being held at Ralph's Chadwick Square Diner (148 Grove Street, Worcester) and is hosted by Rushelle Frazier. THE ECLECTIC WORD, Radio Show
Poet and journalist Victor D. Infante hosts The Eclectic Word, an
Internet radio show that will delve into literature's fringe with poets,
satirists, alternative journalists and even (gasp!) bloggers. We'll be
stepping off the beaten path of literature, taking a close look at the odd,
the eccentric and the cutting-edge. Should be fun.

The show will run at 7 p.m. EST the first and third Friday of every month,
as part of The World Wide Word Radio Network. You can listen to the

Prominent Poets Appearing in Second Annual Poetry Festival
June 24 through June 28

Riverwood Poetry Series, following the success of their first annual festival in 2008, is proud to present their festival for 2009, which will include an impressive array of well-known published poets. For “The Main Event” at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, host Colin Haskins will present Ernie Blue, Bessie Reyna (Hartford Courant’s popular columnist), Kate Rushin, Ameen Storm and Sue Ellen Thompson, reading their award winning poetry. Other venues will feature many published poets, including two-time nominee for California’s Poet Laureate, Lisa Ann LaBasso and a nominee for Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, Bob Jacob. Open mic will also be held in several venues.

Additional Poetry venues include Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Wood Memorial Library in South Windsor, Faxon Branch Library in West Hartford, City Steam Brewery in Hartford, Buttonwood Tree and Gatekeepers Tavern, Middletown. Also, an open invitation to a gathering of poets and friends and fishing enthusiasts, at the Moose Meadow Camping Resort, Willington, CT, hosted by poet, publisher, Victoria Rivas. Riverwood has reserved seven campsites, called the River Sites, with wonderful facilities. Here’s an opportunity to read your poetry and perform acoustic music around the campfires. Even if you're not a camper, come enjoy the company and go back to your comfortable bed.

Poets from Artemis Rising!! Artemis Rising is a Connecticut-based poetry circle of accomplished, electric, powerful, vibrant and bountiful women writers. The group formed in 1997 when a few of us had been seeking a serious writers' group. We wanted to develop our own voices in the company of other women. We also wanted to be part of a group that would be supportive in an emotional sense, that would share life experience as well as poetry, and poetry information. The group provides a strong, supportive community to each member, and we wish you as much success and community spirit in your own group(s) as we experience in Artemis Rising. Featuring Eileen Abrizio, Priscilla Herrington, Suzy Lamson, Mary Elizabeth Lang, Suzanne Niedzielska, Paula Panzarella, Victoria Rivas and Linda Yuhas.

Featuring Charlie Bondhus

On the first Tuesday of every month, Broad Street Books hosts a featured poet followed by an open mic. All are welcome to come and read, recite, perform their work!

Charlie Bondhus won his first prize for poetry in the eighth grade, after which he spent four years writing nihilistic high school verse in the style of Baudelaire. Since then, he has earned his MFA in creative writing from Goddard College and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he teaches writing and literature. In addition to poetry, he writes and publishes fiction and literary criticism. His full-length poetry book How the Boy Might See It, which was a finalist for the 2007 Blue Light Press First Book Award, will be out in 2010, along with his novella Monsters and Victims. Charlie currently resides in Chicopee, Massachusetts, with his longtime partner, their two cats, and a very spirited Madagascar Day Gecko.

The Rose Garden Reading

This poetry reading will feature two Connecticut-based poets,
Nancy Kuhl and Brian Johnson.

Nancy Kuhl’s first full-length collection of poems, The Wife of the Left Hand, was published in 2007 by Shearsman Books; her second book, Suspend, is forthcoming in 2010. She is the author of The Nocturnal Factory, a chapbook published in 2008 by Ugly Duckling Presse. She is co-editor of Phylum Press, a small poetry publisher and Curator of Poetry of the Yale Collection of American Literature at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Brian Johnson is the author of Torch Lake and Other Poems, a finalist for the Norma Farber First Book Award. His poems have appeared in many journals, including American Letters and Commentary, The Prose Poem: An International Journal, Quarter after Eight, Sentence, Connecticut Review, and West Branch. He is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize, a Connecticut Commission on the Arts Fellowship, and two Pushcart Prize nominations. He teaches composition and creative writing at Southern Connecticut State Universit y, where he is also President of the Faculty Senate.
